FSM calls it the Fail Safe System. Looks like the ECM itself, the Camshaft Position Sensor, or the MAF.

I've only been in this mode once. The reason for the ECU engaging fail safe mode is too much wheel spin and other problems. I've done a burnout in water and it didn't engage fail safe mode, so I dunno. But I had my o2 sensor short out b/c the wires got pinched on a metal lip RIGHT next to the sensor. This shorted it out and immediatly went into fail safe mode.

On my VE, there is a metal lip close to the o2 sensor. Check that just to make sure it's just being pinch. If it is being pinched, then check your ENG CONT fuse in the fuse panel. Mine blew at the same time as my o2 sensor shorting out.

Mine did it when after I changed my timing belt I forgot to plug in the MAF harness that I undid to get to the lower radiator hose. I thought I had ruined the engine when I first cranked it! I was sweating bullets!

how about the ecu not reading the ignition coil correctly.

when i do the real time diagnostics i get a ignition coil problem. i think it has something to do with the msd ignition box that is on there. i'm going to unhook it and see if something changes but knowing my luck it won't help.
