funny noise from engine

I'm hearing a noise from the engine when I'm driving. it's hard to explain, but I'll try my best to. The noise sounds like something fluttering only when I'm driving. If I put the car in (park) and rev the engine I don't hear it. I changed my muffler and extension pipe ( the one between the muffler and the Cat Converter).

I've heard other maximas on the road with that same noise. Does any one know what it is and how to fix it? I don't like hearing foreign noises muffling my sweet VE.

P.S. it's not the VTC

possible problem with your y-pipe (flex section going bad) or even a manifold stud is broken.

Just guesses...

probably exhaust studs. check your manifolds and see if you've got any missing.

i thought broken studs would create a hissing noise instead of a flutter

broken studs can create all kinds of different noises, depending on where they are. mine actually ticks like a bad lifter, and I can see it when it does it.

if the manifold warps enough, the gasket will start flapping around, producing a fluttering sound. if it gets really bad, then it'll start hissing as air is always coming out of the leaks.

Guys, you won't believe what the noise was!!
When I checked under the hood, I had the car running. I revved the engine and saw some exhaust shoot out near the EGR valve. To my suprise, that big nut that connect the 1/2" thick pipe to the EGR was off. Don't ask me how that, but that was the problem. So I tightened it real tight and now, my sweet sounding VE is BACK !!! Praise the Maxima Gods
