are you fixing big dents or just little dings? If you are fixing big dents. Pull it out as much as you can (you dont want a lot of bondo in there) then grind it down to the bare metal at the dent and at least 2 inches around the dent with 80 grit or courser paper.
Use the filler you want and sand the filler with 80 grit until its close then go down to 180. Once its close then you prime it. spray a guide coat on it. Then sand with a long board with 180 until the guide coat is gone. This will show you low and high spots on your repair. Then you do more filing and more priming and more sanding with gradualy higher paper (220, 400) it goes on and on like that.
If its just little dings that you do not want to have PDR done on then you can get some stuff called pirahna putty (3M) or equivilant for the repair. Using this or similar putties you do not have to go to the metal. Just scuff the paint with 180 grit and put it directly on the paint. It has excellent adhesion to paint and will save you from cutting into the factory e coat of the car (factory rust proctive layer). then you work the putty just like the bondo except you do not have to use a course paper since this putty sands very easy with 180 grit.
Evercoat makes some good products such as what I am talking about and are a little less expensive than the 3M.
Here is a link to Evercoat and their putties
I highly suggest you do some major research on this before you start. To get it right is not as easy as you would think. Just search on google and you will find a wealth of info.
Good luck.
