Emergency break handle tightening

mine is really loose, a dear friend of mine sat down in the passenger seat, and started making it go up and down because he liked the cool sound the spring made. now, my emergency break handle doesnt work. i raise it all the way up and the car still rolls down the hill. Its an automatic, so every time i get out of PARK, it feels like its grinding the gears because the car is angled on a hill. Surely it didnt do that when my ebreak worked. help me out please, my tranny is old but it works perfectly fine, and i really want to keep it that way. is there a way to tighten your ebreak handle? or your emergency breaks for that matter?

Is there tension when you pull it up? If not then it sounds like your cable might have snapped if there is no tension when pulling up the E-Brake.

Mine has a similar problem. There is tension, but it does not stop the car at all.

As you're sitting in the driver's seat, look at the rubber boot to the left of the handle. You'll see a little break or flap in the boot. This is where you should put in a socket on an extension to tighten the adjusting nut. Or, for a better view, you could pull the rubber boot around the ebrake forward and look to the left of the handle. There's a nut and a long screw in there. Tighten the nut until it takes 8-11 clicks to fully apply the ebrake. You may need a deep socket.

Alternately and for the best view, you could remove the whole console thing around the ebrake (this includes the armrest). This way actually gives you a better view of what you're doing if it's your first time, and you can use a wrench if you don't have deep socket.
