My max is still a project in progress, and I LOVE this car!
Before: 1992 Maxima GXE Automatic. Car was amazing, put 247000 miles on all original parts, tranmission started slipping, fixing that would cost $3000, I didn't have the money, and I love the car and don't want to give up on it, so I decided to make it a project car. $1250 for junkyard engine and tranny and new clutch, and 7 months of work later:
Now: 1992 Maxima GXE, 1993 SE (VE) Engine, 1996 LSD 5 Speed Transmission, 1993 White speedometer cluster (145mpg vs 125, that's the main reason other than the beauty of the white :]), and other little differences.
Still working out the kinks, but it drives and sounds amazing

but I guess it's probably a 94 maximum, since the VE is only 3rd gen right?
btw, the axels were a complete mess to get right, the driver side had to be made from two different year models to get the lengths right, I had it custom fabricated by advance auto.
I didn't put the engine in, I had a local mechanic pull out the old one, replace the wiring harness/computer and put the new engine/tranny in, I installed the clutch pedal and the shifter and the axels, and everything else..
it was a real mess to be honest, it took me 7 months to finish and have it drivable again, but I love it and want to finish it completely

Hmmm... I was told it was pulled from a 96 by the junkyard

well I do know the engine is a 93, I went to the junkyard and looked at it before buying it, it came from a 93, with the transmission, but the transmission was bad, so I had them send over another one, and the second one was making a noise, so I sent it to a machine shop, and the worker put the gears in backwards and destroyed the teeth, so I got a third one and that was a charm, but they told me it was from a 96 (and was labeled 96 with the jy marker). It looks just like the first one, I guess it could be any 3rd gen year...

What's up everyone. My name is Mike, from Chi-town and am currently waiting for my White 1992 SE Maxima 5 speed to arrive from NC. Purchased from autotrader.com. Excited, can't wait and will post pics soon after I receive my baby. This is the car that got me hooked into Nissan cars when I was growing up.
I currently own a 2003 fully loaded Altima SE 3.5 V6 automatic, sheer silver ext black leather int. My previous car was my 99 Altima GXE which I gave to my mother. Still going strong.

Hey all, I'm Mike. I own a '93 Maxima SE, red, manual. I'd like to thank the board for recently guiding me through replacing the clutch, ball joints, tie rod ends and passenger side CV axle. Car forum members rule.
<edited>LOL, I didn't get this at all. I'm supposed to do something with a map?

Need help, I bought my wife's 3rd generation Maxima. Lets just say lady driven, she hardly did any work on this beaut, I have rust on the passenger side plus the touch pads for entry do not work. The Maxima has 270k the way she runs I think I should get another 50k before any real problems.
Should i sell or should I fix. My first thought is to fix and do it up right.
Any suggestions?

Gainesville, Fla here! Thanks for having me. I bought my Max this summer, it's a 1989 and has a very low 127,000 miles. It has the Star Trek looking dashboard as well as the HUD and I love it! I've been lurking around this board for a while, but this is my first post. Thank you all for your well written responses to everyone's questions ... they help out everyone else too. So far I've changed my drum brakes on my Maxima and I am going to do the driver's cv axle, ball joint, and axle seals either tomorrow or Monday ... wish me luck!
Thanks again for having me!

Hello forum
My name is Milan and I just picked up a 93 Maxima SE 5 speed. 195K. Needs TLC and already did the rear brakes, replaced one injector and ready to replace both cv shafts. So far I have around $950 in her. Drives great, interior is ok while the exterior has rust in the common max spots. Fun to drive! I'm not gonna post any pics soon since it is an eye sore from the outside. This thing is fast!!

My turn...I own three Maximas. An 89se 5spd, 92se 5spd, and an 02se 6spd. Sold a 97se 5pd and all my max's are white except the 89 which I'm letting my kid brother have. Been a Nissan fanatic for 25 years and it don't stop.

The Eastern Shore of MARYLAND! I drive a 1991 maxima se 5-speed and i Love it. I also use to own a 87 maxima automatic that came with a 87 5-speed for parts. That car had sooo many electrical gremlins it was terrible so i gave them both away and found my 91, needless to say ive been hooked on maxima ever since!

Hey all I have a 93 gxe auto and am having some shifting issues. If the overdrive was turned on it will not shift just rev but i turn off the overdrive and it will shift. It still has some issues shifting though you have to let off the gas a little bit around 2 or 3 grand and it will shift, you really have to baby it. Wnated to know if the whole tranny might be bad or if it might be the tcu that is bad. I have read a lot of posts about transmissions on here and the talk about getting codes from it but dont know how to retrive them and no check engine light on. Just got done putting the motor and tranny back in had to replace all the freeze plugs on the block, one was leaking between the block and tranny.
Any info will help, thank you in advance.

You'll have a better chance of getting a response in this thread

From what I heard, the auto trans on the VG engine are weak. Might be a bad tranny, don't take my word for it tho.
