sanding headlights/fogs to look new again?

has anyone ever sanded, and buffed out their headlights and foglights to make them look brand new again? is there a thin protective coating on the headlights and foglights to keep them from oxidizing? i might want to do this but i just want to know if anyone has tried it yet.

Where I work we sell this product called "Headlamp Restore Kit" which is supposed to restore headlamps from old foggy to the new look. I've never tried such product but its about 5-10 bucks, you can give it a try.

I spent 2 weeks with a random orbital sander and grits from 200 to 2000 wet and they never really got to "Like new" , and I mean 2 weeks of sanding, not it took 2 weeks to do. Spend the 40 some odd bucks and buy new replacements. Really trust me.
