i've got an 89 gxe with a wierd noise coming from the pully side of the motor. It sounds as if a pully is shot, has anyone had this kind of problem??? I hope it is'nt the water pump but the sound seems to be coming from one of the pulleys closest to the firewall. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with the pully tensioner in my 92 SE, its the one that tensions the belt of the A\C, the problem was that the bearing was damage or wear, so I just bought the bearing and replaced it. You will need a press in order to get the bearing out of the pulley, and in. And of course you have to get the pully out.

Thanks for the info....I'll get it checked out, the noise is getting kind of annoying.

gettin pulleys out is a pain. but replacing the bearing and the belts will hopefully clear up your annoying problem.

thanks, i guess i'll do my timing belt while i've got the front of the motor apart. Anything different that needs to be done when doing the timing belt on an 89?

Change the tensioner for the timing belt, the water pump, thermostat, and the other drive belts while you are at it.

as has been said, it's most likely the A/C tensioner pulley bearing. it cost me $10 at a local bearing supply place, MUCH cheaper than Nissan parts!

this was actually the first maintenance I ever had to do on my car.. just FYI..
