Is my Chiltons wrong and ColumbianMax right?

Went through search to check on Timing.Which for my 89 GXE should be 15.
Now in the Chiltons Chapter 2 -13 it has it as the 3rd line .It goes.
l l l l
0 10 15 20
Clombianmax Has it the 4th line
(firewall) | | | | | | | (headlamp)
...................15
Cause I just changed my timing and went by the CHILTON cause I changed the valve cover gasket and moved the distributor. So do I have it on 10 or 15 right now?

yeah that's what that picture shows too. it starts at 0 (first mark) and counts by 5* so it's 0* (1st), 5* (2nd) 10* (3rd) and 15* (4th)

Unless you have to count the line on the point.Cause it shows the point which has a line on the center of it. Then it goes 0,10,15,20.
ColumbianMax has it the 4th line.
So where should i have it on 3rd or 4th line?
Because right now i have it on the 3rd line. Is that 10 or 15 ?

the thing labelled "timing indicator" is covering up the 15* line, but the line is still there, and it's the 4th line. the lines are evenly spaced and do not skip. they are 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. you want the one in the very middle, for 15* timing.

time to the 4th one. or if you use higher octane gas, between the 4th and 5th (around, say, 18*, that's what mine runs)

Ok. So the timing indicator in the picture is covering a line up? So tommorrow when I do my timing i'll put it on the 4th line? Correct?

I just freakin noticed. On the pic towards the lower right where it says
B.T.D.C. Mines is faded. Its the freakin 4th line.

Hey I just noticed my name was mentioned lol...

the 4th line should be 15 degrees according to what I read on FSM. Like Capedcadaver said if you want a bit of advanced timing, simply put it between the 4th and 5th line and thats about 17-18 degrees, you'll feel a nice difference but be sure to use 92-93 octane aka Premium

btw not to be a **** but its Colombian with an O
oh and your chiltons is a POS, I hate Chiltons and Haynes, they cant even get their generations straight

Did you make sure you car was on Neutral when you adjusted the timing? oh by the way how does it feel now?

its cool about the spelling, its a VERY common way to mispell it, especially in America

It depends if you're from Colombia the country (yes i even know the capital is Bogotá). yay for random knowledge) or Columbia SC. Or Columbus OH.

Anyhow, the Hayne's stucks because it goes 85-92 then 93-04. What kind of crap is that? They took an 86 and a 95 and called it a manual? They should have had the brains to separate them by generation truly, plus they have no book with a 3rd gen teardown. Succccks.

crap i never noticed this when i did my timing belt. i just went by the timing marks in my FSM. then again you guys are talking about the distributor being moved when the front valve cover gasket needs replacement and i did the same thing. and for a moment i got lost cuz i didn't mark the position in which i pulled out the distributor. luckily Matt was there to help and so was my old boss from the shop that i use to work at. but i never noticed at what degree mine stayed at. mind you that i swapped my engine in after that little confusion and it has been running nice since then but i will take a look at this to see if mine is where it should be.

You should check out the Chilton's manual for the early Z cars... covers 1970 up to 1988, so... the 240Z, 260Z, 280Z, 280ZX n/a and turbo, and the 300ZX n/a and turbo. On top of that they can't even do vacuum diagrams right (among many, many, many other things). They had wiring mixed in with the vacuum diagram that had nothing to do with anything. Complete idiots.

If you're using a stock pulley, aim for the yellow timing mark.

the TB gasket is usually always in stock at the dealer and is usually just 2-4 bucks more expensive than at the average parts store, I'd check your local dealer, hell I've actually seen OEM parts cheaper than cheap aftermarket at Autozone

God I hate Chilton's. I'll take a Hayne's book over Chilton's anytime.

but believe it or not, I've spotted several typos and wrong info in the FSM too... especially concerning parts-testing procedures

Cleaned the throttle body. Was pretty bad. Pedal not sticking no more.New gasket.
Redid the idle Ecu clockwise and car in neutral.
Checked the PVC valve which is kinda new.Found a small piece of gunk In it.
Cleaned it up.
Engine pretty quiet and RPM needle steady.
