wow....the spring pressure of a valve spring is in excess of 100 lbs....while the VTC spring (wild guess) may be more like <5lbs....

K, i have nothing left to add to this thread for now, until i get back from cali for the holidays, and get teh VE block...

except the fact that a 1997 mazda millenia i just bought has a common problem of the timing tensioner failing, and causes a HORRIFIC clacking noise, similar to our clacking, but 20x worse.....sounds more like a broken rocker arm, or bent valve or something.

yea. him and kevin had picked a bad day to drive her . even though she has the lo-rpm miss she gets up even quicker!

i had the vtc clatter a treatment of engine restore somewhat did the trick.

now they only clatter when it's time for an oil change.
well it's weird. you can start her up they won't clatter.
shut it off then start her back up then they do.
but goes away when warmed.

when mine are ungrounded, they are random as well, it seems. sometimes they wont clack, sometimes they will always clack, and sometimes they quiet down when they warm up.

'iono'.
