I don't know if the valvetrain is forged,but my guess would be yes..

Ok, ok, hugz. This VG on VE crime is making me sick. The clackers are picking on the slackers. Can't we all just... get along?

BTW I hope in some time soon that there will be a wiki or sticky page on VG vs VE. The benefits and cons of both. But I understand that the VG is older technology, and someone need study the VG engine to maximize its potential. Maybe it wasn't paired with the right transmission. 6 speed autos are now becoming widespread.

The VG doesn't have potential, its as simple as a bulletproof window. Unless you turbo it of course.

Hey guys I think I've found a good deal! A tranny just rebuilt for $950 with a year of warranty! I think this one is better than a used one for $650 with 90 days warranty right?

I even told mechanic and he said I should go for it, since it's a tranny that has been rebuilt already and with a year of warranty is more reliable than the used one which nobody knows if will last a couple of years or couple of weeks.

300 more for an almost newish, rebuilt tranny. should be good for mebe 60,000 miles, if you do not abuse it, at least.

i am not a mechanic, either, but for something problematic like the vg auto, i would say its a better deal than the used.

is there a core charge, and if so, is this after the charge? if you do not know, ask, may be worth it!

I didn't know anything about the core charge, but I asked and they told me they have to keep my old tranny indeed, otherwise there will be a core charge of $100, anyways I don't think I can keep my old tranny and have no use for it and no room, so, it will be $950 after giving them the old tranny.

Sounds like a better choice. I'm a few weeks away from pulling my VG automatic, buyin' a complete rebuild kit, including clutch steels, clutch discs, reverse transbrake, solenoids, seals and bearings and doing it myself. I talked to a local trans shop and they said they'd change out any parts I didn't have the specialized tools for. $80 a pop! Anybody know where I can get a set of those bizarre extended-reach snap ring pliers like they show in the FSM?

IMO, the VG-auto sux sooo bad! I have one. I only replaced it with a JDM used tranny from a distributor. It had a 6mth warranty.

So, as many VG-auto drivers can attest, the sluggish shifting of the VG-auto is just almost horrible. What do I mean? When I drive, sometimes, I need that quick burst to accelerate. Situations arise in cases where I'm on the highway on-ramp. When it "downshifts" and jerks the way it does, I pray this one time isn't going to be the one where the tranny explodes and leaves all my stuff on the on-ramp.

Second, it also sucks when you're driving a little fast (say 45-50) and then you come to a somewhat quick stop, and try to re-accelerate, there's a big delay before it seems the tranny decides to be in the correct gear.

BUUUUTTT! I understand your situation with no garage, etc. I'm in the same boat. So, if you're going to get a rebuilt transmission, ask if the Valve body was upgraded/addressed. Level10 is one of the sites that describes what the VB modification is. I believe any reputable tranny shop can do it, but may not necessarily be a "modification" in their eyes, rather a upgrade/change. A tranny shop I took my car to get a VB upgrade said it wouldn't be a good idea to do it on a possibly already unhealthy transmission, as the VB upgrade can worsen the tranny. However, they said with a rebuilt tranny, the VB upgrade is a good idea. So, check to see if the rebuilders did any "upgrading" to the VB.
