Who cares who's gone the fastest. If your gonna go fast, might as well do it legally and safely. Someday someone is gonna try to take their maxima out on a public highway and try to get their top speed and they'll try to take a picture and end up crashing and killing themselves or others.

I agee that it is a safety hazard... and someone else in the car should take the pic. Its fun when no one is around. Serious.. Its true you can kill your self, but dont take anyone elses life in the proccess. Its cool to state how fast you have gone.... but the best place to show it is on a track... which I would like to do

Nevin, I completely agree with you, but I've come to the realization that the people here don't give a damn what we say, and they're going to do whatever they want anyway. if they're dumb enough to go out and kill themselves trying to take a pic of their maxed out speedo, then it's one less moron on the face of this planet. I do drive fast myself, but I DON'T endanger others while doing it. the highways around here are pretty sparse at night, so it's no problem to break 140-150 and slow back down on these highways between other vehicles.

So for the guys out there trying to do this stuff in traffic or on bad roads, don't blame us when you wind up in a pine box or with a tube stuffed down your throat in a hospital. you've been warned and you should know better anyway.

Amen!
Street racing is for idiots. When I did my 134 I was alone on an interstate with no other cars around.

I did it only once in the early AM on a straight interstate with no other cars around also. I would never do that otherwise, there are too many factors that could go wrong. Besides, be careful to all, being caught by police over 100mph wont look good on your record.

I did 132mph in my '91 GXE. Surprisingly the rpm wasn't all that high either. I could have sworn it was only about 4.4-5k. Also, when I've tested my top speed, it is on a LOOOOOONG straight road, out of the city. It really is in the wilderness basically. No one ever really drives down it so it is pretty safe.

yes i have proof and a 1600 dollar reciept from my lawyer as well.

here is the mental proof

look at the tach in a ve 5spd when doing normal speeds.

i had the needle buried in 5th well past 145 mph. with 17x8 inch wheels

larger wheels drop the final drive, we all know this.
i had a shift light set to come on at 6350 rpms.
i was bouncing the rev limiter in 5th gear.

in theory with 17's the car is over 170 mph at absolute redline/fuel cut.

this has been beat to death, and several years old. Andi b proved it can be done with a math equation i can't quite remember.

i think it was around 178 mph was the max velocity of the ve in 5th at fuel cut.

I pulled pretty good to 130, then put it in 5th, and went to 140 pretty good, then the speedo hit 145, and I ran out of road :-(. I only go that fast on flat country roads at night. That way any time I've run across an officer (3x in the past 10 years), they've always just flashed their lights on then off. I imagine they figure why waste their time. By the time they got to speed they would have no clue where I went. Does anyone make a higher speedo for the 3rd gen's?

I already posted this in another thread but I will share in here to.
To find out your top speed (This does not factor in drag/road level/ect.) My example: You double your tach speed in a single gear and you double your MPH. So for example my 94 SE is at 3500 in 5th at 90 mph. If I where to double my tach speed to 7000 I would be going 180mph. Now of course the redline in a VE is not 7k so I would not be able to take it up that high. But you get the point, So Brain is right...... on paper it is low-mid 170s in a VE 5 speed

108mph driving the Dodge Intrepid rental I just had. (electronic limiter again...)
150mph driving Tony's Ferrari 550 Maranello (still pulling hard)
100mph driving Clint's Suburban towing my Supra to Rochester for the start of One Lap (electronic limiter... sigh..)
125mph for hours on end driving a Golf TDi 6sp AWD in Europe (~115hp, topped out).

and..

165mph driving my Supra back when I had stock twins, with the targa top off (wasn't really pulling anymore... maybe could've done 170).

Whooaaa... some threads never die!

well, 140mph in my 89SE before I got pulled over and had the crap beat out of me by a county Sheriff and put in jail for the weekend. That was the last time I sped down a public road, nearly 2 years ago. All I can say is I learned the value of takin it to the track, ya know?
Only mods at the time were custom cat-back exhaust, sways, springs, and heavy-azz 18" chrome rims that I quickly sold after that. Now my car could see 140 in half the time (if I only had a tranny!! )
