Tire to wheel sizes
OK sorry about being a newbie but here it goes. I want to put 17" wheels on a 93 GXE and i was wondering what tire sizes fit with out any rubbing in the tire well or anything like that. I was thinking of getting the Konig Rated R's with 225/45/R17. Not gonna buy just yet but planning for the very near future. I checked that tire size calculator at miata.net but wasnt sure. Thanks

Well, as long as you tried searching There IS a lot of info out there and it's hard to distill sometimes. The Konig Rated R's I found on the internet were all 17x7" size, so I wouldn't go wider than 225/45/17 even though the closest size is 235/45/17 (too wide for a 7" rim).
James92SE got Konig Subzeros on his car with the same tire size a few weeks ago. He's reported no rubbing or any problems yet. The Subzeros have 45mm offset and the Rated Rs (the ones I've seen) have only 40mm, so I think you should be alright there. You can try asking James what he thinks of his setup.
The way our cars are, most of the worry isn't in rubbing the fender, but rubbing the suspension. It might help also if you choose a tire with a narrower cross-section. Go to www.tirerack.com and look at the Yokohama Avid T4/H4. The section width for this tire is greater than other makes/models in the same size. Sometimes this is because of a rim protector or rim guard on the side of the tire. Yes, we are probing the limits with tires this wide, so every bit helps!
Nice rim choice BTW.

Oh that's good they don't make the Yokohamas because my point was NOT to get those! I bet one of those two tires at Whalentire are the Kumhos. I've heard both good and bad things about them, but they are probably THE best deal in Ultra High Performance tires out there, so I plan on getting Kumhos (when the time is right).
