Help diagnose clunking noise -- not steering related

I've got some more problems with my Max. It has a clunking sound coming from the front passenger side when accelerating from a stop and while braking. This isn't related to the clunking some people experice while turning. There is also some squeaking coming from the same area, however I think this is just a strut replacement issue.

When lifted I notice what seemed like too much "play" in the cv-shaft. Not up-down motion but in-out. I'm not sure how normal that is, but I wonder if this is related. My thinking is that the cv-shaft is banging on the inside of the knuckle. Anyone have any ideas?

When you say in-and-out, do you mean the top and bottom of the wheel together. In at the same time, out at the same time? Or is it when you push the top of the wheel the bottom pops out and vice-versa? If it's the latter, you may need control arms.

Wheel seems solid. It's actually the cv-shaft itself. I can grab the shaft and physically "slide" it back and forth.

It's normal to have some back and forth play in the axles. But a clunking noise during acceleration and braking can be an indication of a worn out CV joint.

Interesting. I really didn't consider that the joints may be the problem. Thanks for the lead. Anyone else have this problem?
