CV Boots Replacement

Anyone know if I have to drain the tranny before taking out the axle? I got some conflicting intructions on the net and from the factory service manual. Also, I've tried to pull the driver side axel out today with no luck, is there an easier way of doing so? I was also looking at my inner cv boots, they looked like they are about to go. Anyone know where I can get them for a good deal. Any other instuctions on this subject that you guys might have.
thanks
charlie

dan,
is your cv boot out on the passenger side? have they been out for a while before you noticed it? if yes, then you have a busted cv joint. you might have to replace it. i caught mine before it was gone too far.

Just replace the whole axle.

Easier than replacing the whole boot, and doesn't cost a whole lot more anyway.

i noticed it after i had installed my struts and springs..i just had it parked and turn the wheel and heard it rub..so i should just replace the both axles or just the right side only? but do i have to buy the cv boots also or does it come all together? The cv joint um around wats teh prce range on those and where can i get a good price on it?thanks

check to see if the cv boot is ruptured first. if yes, then check to see the inside of the joint. if it is dried up or if you see rust in it, then you have to replace the cv joint. i saw one on ebay for $25. but you will still need to buy the cv boot. it is easier to replace the axle, but it's not necessary to replace both of them. but since you are already doing one side, might as well do the other. that's what i'm doing to mine.

recently replaced both front axel assemblies and i did drain the transmission fluid first. i don't know if it's completely necessary for both sides but just wanted to be sure.
