ECU Code 05 04, any ideas ?

I have a 1997 nissan maxima that has a tendency to stall when I shift from park to reverse, and it also stalls when I drive. There seems to be pause between gear changes. This is the code that i got. 05 04 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL UNIT SIGNAL TO ECU.
Any ideas what it is and what do I need to do to fix it ?

There is something going wrong with your transmission. You must extract the code(s) from the tranny computer. This is seperate from the ECU. Does your Overdrive lamp flash at startup? If so, this is a sign that something is wrong with the tranny. If you have access to a Haynes manual, refer to pages 7B-2 thru 7B-3. This will guide you through the procedure of extracting the DTC code of the transmission. It seems like a lengthy process, but at least you'll know what is exactly wrong.
