another low-end power thread

ok ive searched and read posts and posts and stuff, and i keep getting contradicting views. ive got a 96 maxima with 163000 miles, getting up there, and im going to flush everything and change the belts with its oil change at 163000 miles to try and get some of its old kick back. but i need more low end torque. the '03 max (yes, with the different VQ engine i know) is so much punchier in the low end than mine, but the feel behind the wheel is so different my numbers have to be lagging more in the old car than what im reading on paper. basically, what im getting at is that i want more low end torque (1500-3000 range) like everyone else and their dead cat does. ive read from you posters than HAI's will increase it, CAI's will increase, HAI's and CAI's will decrease it, stuff like that, and i dont know what to believe. how about a Y-pipe? turbocharger? supercharger? i know im not going to get punch like the '03 max but i know this 96 beast can do more than it's doing.

I'll be honset with you...I had just a pop charger, I was happy with it- first mod, sounded good and some better throttle response, but did lose some low end. During the summer of 2k2, the big thing was starting to be these hybrid/frankencar intakes. So I put on a mid pipe, souneded much louder- supposedly it was to "give you back the lowend lost from the pop charger" thats a false claim- it doesnt.

Mine is auto, so that might make things a bit worse too. Then I got all the exhaust mods (Y pipe, b pipe and muffler) and still felt like I was lacking in lowend, but actually take off much better than other 5spd maximas did.

Turbos, you're not going to have that lowend either because the turbo needs to spool up, but ultimatly can make more power. The supercharger is going to give you steady power across the band, and isnt bad. I went the nitrous route, and suddenly low end didnt matter anymore because at 3k, it pulls HARD to redline.

I guess if you want this low end either get a CAI or hack the airbox- but get a Y pipe anyways, they are a good mod.

Good luck

Justin

Keep your intake stock for the most low end torque. Disassemble your intake and clean everything out and you'll be suprised at how much more low end you'll get back in your engine.

One thing you can do it improve off the line performance is goto lighter/smaller tires. For example buy some lightweight 15in wheels and put some 205/50-15 tires on them. This will give you more torque multiplication since its like increase the final drive ratio. The only other way to get more torque multiplication would be to swap out the differential gear from the stock 3.62 to say 4.18 from sentra/200sx se-r. My vote goes for the wheels/tires instead.

163000mi and your just starting to mod it out? Bolts ons are ok but I definately wouldn't recomend a turbo/ supercharger.

Just my 2 cents

Of course make sure everything is maintained and clean first. Then I agree with Nismo87SE about reducing the rolling weight. That and the CAI and UDP seemed to help my low end torque. I've seen as high as 197tq to the wheels at 3500rpm. Factoring for lighter wheels/tires I've got a weight/tq ratio of 11.9 at that rpm. I bet on a good day I can break under a 6sec 0-60mph. That's enough punch for me.

Check the knock sensor. If it is bad, the engine loses a lot of power. Do a search. There were a lot of info about knock sensor a few weeks ago.
