700$ air flow meter??!?!

Well my car stalled randomly the other day, not even accelerating and the check engine light came on. I drove it a couple days, then decided to take it in to see what was wrong, because i couldnt do a self analysis with the computer, the screw that you have to turn in mine is missing.

SO i take it in, i tell them to see what went wrong with it, and change the oil. They call back and say that my "Air flow meter" malfunctoined, and that it could happen anytime, like when turning infront of traffic. They came up with all these scary scenarios and convinced my dad to buy a new air flow meter for about 700 dollars.

was i ripped off horribly?

I would say yeah. You prolly could of gotten one from those guys over here for $40, or go to the junkyard.

Yes, you were. You can get a perfectly good maf sensor from the junkyard for far, far less than that. Sometimes you see them on ebay.

Just an FYI...since you have a '99 you DO have a screw to turn for your ecu.

Use a jeweler's screwdriver...the screw for us '99s is actually VERY small.

--Did your Dad already buy the air flow meter? If so I don't think there really is anything you can do.

did you get a CODE for it? I mean the MAF gives out a code to the ECU when it's malfunctioning. They made you but the most expensive thing they could. If the car runs better they probably fixed whatever was wrong with it, a loose hose, and ripped you off...

In situations like this, always always always make them give you back the old part so you can have it checked out.

Had the same thing happen six months ago. Researched the prices: new at my mechanic's shop was $400, advance auto-$250, junkyard-$50. I went to the junkyard. No problems yet.
