Need Help...
Hey,
I joined the Maxima.org just because i have a maxima. It may sound dumb, but i dont know anything about cars, except knowing how to drive, and that i need to do oil change every 3000 miles
I bought my car, 4 months ago, the owner didnt have any records on what he has done to the car. It's a 95' Max with 87kml. (AUTO)
my question is: how do i do the tune up? and what does it mean? the mileage on my car is pretty high, so i was wondering if i need any maintenance?
The car drives fine, only some whisteling noise from the engene when the fan is on, and shimming stearing wheel all the time, the rest is fine as far as i can feel, but as i said i dont know anything about cars.
I went to a Nissan dealership, they said its $85 just to check the car, and see what it needs... is that true??? (Marylnd)
Any response is appreciated
Thanks

yeah, read the faq man and lots of posts/threads on maxima.org. Before you know it, you'll be doing everything by yourself and your Maxima will love you for it.
Also, you must know that 90% of time dealers lie and even if they don't, they still rip you off big! $85 just to see what the car needs? You gots to be kidding me! - anyway, DON'T DO IT!

Not sure on the reliability of local mechanics over there, but my car has lived most of it's life being serviced by a local mechanic (and recently me for an oil change) and never had anything go wrong in it yet apart from a starter motor (which was from normal wear and tear). Any competent mechanic will do at least an equal job as a Nissan dealer will and for a cheaper price too

Tuneup just means that you replace some maintainance things so that your car runs good. For a tuneup, you replace the spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, and PCV valve.
Also, clean your TB (throttle body) while you're at it http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/517 and replace the power steering fluid with Dexron III ATF (yes, our cars use auto trans fluid as the power steering fluid) http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/702 Replace the coolant if you want to http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/502
Do the tuneup yourself, it's not that hard. Only use NGK spark plugs. If you have the money, get NGK platinums ($8-$15 each) or you can get the NGK V-Power copper plugs ($1.50-$2 each). You will need 6 spark plugs since your car has 6 cylinders (V6 engine
) http://maxmods.dyndns.org/?MaximaSparkPlugs for the plug numbers.
The directions for a tuneup are in the How To's post at the top
