Deciding on a cold air intake
i've been looking at CAI's and i've found that Injen is the most advertised and it is a very trusted company. i was wondering if $270 is worth it. i've been seeing other companys like Bomz and the ebay ones for $40-70. Which one do u guys think gives the best power increase and best sound for my '99 SE 5spd
Thanks for the info

Injen intakes are for show... they make some power... but regardless an intake is intake. I have am ebay CAI i got for $39. Very happy with it. Help me run a 15.6 in thte 1/4 mile. But i am sure people will argue with me... blah blah its all good. It ultimatly comes down to you

get the injen knock off, thats wat i have and im sure it performs just as well as the injen. i got mine off of ebay and installed it 2 weeks ago, sounds gr8 and has a lil pick up around 3500rpms. just be sure to get a better filter than the one it comes with ;-)

I've had awesome luck with Injen...I got mine for 205 bucks so 270 would be a rip. I'm sure there are cheaper routes but I think I got my money's worth and more going with Injen....to get it cheaper go to www.adventon.com

From what I read, it is definitely not worth it to pay that kind of money for something that you can do for free with a drill and a razor knife. I mean, just cut some holes in the airbox and you will have the power and the noise. This free way, is going to give you more low end power anyway.

The hacked airbox is free and will make some gains, especially with a K&N filter panel. Keep in mind that the hacked air box WILL draw hot air in from the engine compartment. A CAI like the Place Racing, Warpspeed, or true CAI on EBAY (not the Injen knock off) do pull in cooler ambient air at all speeds and will tend to work better in the 60 degree+ weather. The Injen, hybrid, POP, and hacked air box all pull in hot air. At the track they're pretty decent, but around town the air temp sensor will be reading high temps therefore it will be dialing back timing to keep detonation at a minimal.
FYI, on a 70 degree day at a stop (ie stoplight) and with 140-160 degree engine compartment air (typical), it takes about 10-15 seconds of 40mph driving to cool the compartment down close to ambient 70-80 degrees. If you're doing a lot of stop and go driving, the compartment temps can go higher and take longer to dissapate. Typically what happens with a non-CAI setup is that the engine will feel a bit boggy in the lower rpms and under tip-in throttle. Many times it will feel like it takes a lot more throttle to get up to speed. This is related to the reduced timing due to heat and slightly turbulent intake air of a shorter intake (hybrid, POP, hacked). The CAIs don't seem near as influenced because they're constantly sucking in cooler air and their long intake lengths help keep a column of air in the intake tract. My CAI piping and midpipe (Place Racing setup) is cool to the touch on hot 80 degree days in around the town driving. I never believed it until I got a CAI.
At the track, the difference in performance is nill. The hacked, hybrid, POP, and CAI all perform the same according to my same day track testing (70 degree night).
It's all up to you on what you want to spend and what kind of drivability you want.

EBAY?? Buy your equipment on the org!!! This week I bought the ultimate intake.
Cattman CAI plus extra MAF adapter for JWT velocity stack (I also paid $20.00 shipped back in the day for my JWT intake) - $20.00 shipped
96 Thottle Body- $20.00
96 Upper and Lower Intake Manifold - $40.00
Shipping for manifolds and throttle body - $23.00
After I port the throttle body, port match the upper and lower intake manifold and ceramic coat everything (to keep temps way down, and keep intake speed up) I bet I still come out cheaper than some of the intakes mentioned here (I hope this makes more power than a conventional intake too )
Buy on the org or spend too much.

It's not a huge bog, but you definately feel the lower performance lagging around town in hot weather.
