No start: Replace starter or just regrease it?

I had a no start situation yesterday that I resolved by banging on the starter with a piece of re-bar (I remembered someone on the forum a couple of years back solving their no-start this way, at least temporarily).

So my question is, should I just regrease the gear set (as outlined on the Motorvate.ca site), or is the problem just gong to keep reapparing (i.e., is it the gear set being sticky or something else in the starter that's effed up?)

thanks

regreasing is free, or at least very cheap. i would try that first instead of buy a new starter.
