UDP belt tightening

hey guys just wondering how these are supposed to be tightened. i know where the screws are to tighten, but i was reading up on it, and i read this

For a new compressor belt the deflection should be 3.8-4.1 mm, and the power steering belt should be 6.5-7 mm.
how do i see the deflection?

once the belt is on and tightened you should not be able to twist it more than 90 degreese. You should actually barely be able to twist it that much.

You said you knew how to tighten the belt right?

So you asked, how do you know it's tight enough.. and what Vlasic was saying is that when the belt is tight enough, if you try to twist the belt along it's longest span (between two of the pulleys), you shouldn't be able to twist if 90 degrees - if you can twist/rotate it that far, that means, it's too loose.

My other comment was that the chicagomaximas.com website you provide in your sig gives me an error saying "You do not have permission to access directory listing on this page" or something similar.

What Vlasic and njmodi are talking about is a second and easier way to test for the proper amount of deflection. What you are asking for is the following:
You need a straight edge and a ruler. With the straight edge, put it from the belt of one pulley to the belt of the other pulley. (Pick the pulleys that are the farthest apart). Then, with your other hand, push the belt down with the ruler and measure the amount of deflection. This is the amount you see on the ruler below the straight edge. Make sense?

^^^ Wizard, the key point you missed is how hard you are supposed to push when measuring deflection.. there is a recommended force...

Hmmmm. I don't remember the recomended force. I can't remember off of the top of my head, but I thought they only say to use moderate force . I can look it up tonight if need be, Mr. Duck.

I never liked the whole "turn the belt 90 degrees" test because I can always force the belt to go more than 90 degrees. It just depends on what "hard" means to each individual. What is hard for one person may be easy for another. I've always been partial to the straight edge and ruler test.

If I can't push the belt up more than a quarter inch with my left hand, it's tight enough for me on mine. I belive they say 1/4 inch deflection with moderate force, but yeah, it's all relative and subjective...
