I recently did about 200lbs of weight reduction along with changing the fuel filter.

Yesterday I was driving my 95 maxima for a business trip. Since I was driving for work and getting paid hourly + mileage, I decided to go the speed limit, 65mph, instead of my normal 90mph. I got 30mpg. My speedo is off by about 10%, so that's a corrected figure. The actual indicated mileage was 32.8mpg.

Wahoo, the VQ really likes low rpms, lower speeds, with weight reduction. The car also has 199k miles on it. The vq seems to get better with age.

Oh, and this was with a 5spd.

It's pretty hard to get above 27mpg with a 5spd. Do you have an auto?

This one's different since he did something different...Weight Reduction. 200 lbs is pretty significant in our cars, unless he's talking about himself!!! Either way, I'd like to hear what he did as well, plus how it has affected his driving experience.

I just bought one, and couldn't be happier so far. What is the "other" car?

I just did my first tank after I bought my '98. In mixed driving (50/50 city/hwy) and hard on gas (still enjoying the power after I switched from 4-cyl Accord) I did 300 miles on 16.5 gal of gas - almost the same as in my Accord driven in city only. I'll replace the the fuel filter this weekend and find out if there will be any change in mpg.

Since 30% of your fuel economy is completely dependant on how hard you accelerate your vehicle, it's not surprising that long trips will get you good economy. Its how you start from stopped and how you accelerate to speed that truely determines your actual fuel economy.

EPA figures are a guide only and are not reflective of "real-world" testing. If you want to see 'real-world" figures, go here and you can see them for those that keep track.

i average 29mpg @ ~ 65mph in my 98 auto, 140k miles. Hence why im afraid to do a tuneup haha. It doesnt really need one, but i have put 20k on it so its probably due soon.

I've gotten 26-27 highway before I think, completely stock, no weight reduction, and a few bursts to 110 thrown in the mix. 170K miles.

I got 32 mpg after adding weight on a road trip. 120+ lbs of stereo crap in the trunk, a passenger, and luggage in the back seat... 5spd and 175k averaging 75 mph. All it takes is simple maintenance and being steady on the gas pedal.

Normal city driving I average 24mpg. Of course I drive like a grandma to pull it off.

Easy. Accelerate slow as hell, drive 60 on the highway, get out of gear as soon as you reasonably can, shift at 1.5k rpm, sometimes lower. Now i know that shifting so low isnt a good idea, so i don't do it anymore. I just wanted to see how good MPG i could get. That 28mpg for the whole tank included maybe 3 or 4 WOT runs from 0-70ish as well. I was very surprised myself.

FWIW, if any one subscribes to Grassroots Motorsports, they did a fuel mileage article inthe latest issue. While no Nissans were included, they DID give an outline of how EPA mileage figures are achieved. Interesting reading.
