got 30mpg on a trip yesterday
I recently did about 200lbs of weight reduction along with changing the fuel filter.
Yesterday I was driving my 95 maxima for a business trip. Since I was driving for work and getting paid hourly + mileage, I decided to go the speed limit, 65mph, instead of my normal 90mph. I got 30mpg. My speedo is off by about 10%, so that's a corrected figure. The actual indicated mileage was 32.8mpg.
Wahoo, the VQ really likes low rpms, lower speeds, with weight reduction. The car also has 199k miles on it. The vq seems to get better with age.
Oh, and this was with a 5spd.

haha i drive hard all the time and get 200 miles to about 20 bucks of gas. So thats like 22 mpg down here. i have tried to drive slow and easy and i still dont get much better gas mileage.

I just did my first tank after I bought my '98. In mixed driving (50/50 city/hwy) and hard on gas (still enjoying the power after I switched from 4-cyl Accord) I did 300 miles on 16.5 gal of gas - almost the same as in my Accord driven in city only. I'll replace the the fuel filter this weekend and find out if there will be any change in mpg.
Since 30% of your fuel economy is completely dependant on how hard you accelerate your vehicle, it's not surprising that long trips will get you good economy. Its how you start from stopped and how you accelerate to speed that truely determines your actual fuel economy.

I got 32 mpg after adding weight on a road trip. 120+ lbs of stereo crap in the trunk, a passenger, and luggage in the back seat... 5spd and 175k averaging 75 mph. All it takes is simple maintenance and being steady on the gas pedal.
Normal city driving I average 24mpg. Of course I drive like a grandma to pull it off.

FWIW, if any one subscribes to Grassroots Motorsports, they did a fuel mileage article inthe latest issue. While no Nissans were included, they DID give an outline of how EPA mileage figures are achieved. Interesting reading.
