Bar/Piece behind bumper/under headlights.

I just got a '97 Maxima and while I was replacing the bumper I noticed this. I knew the car had gotten into an accident but I just don't know how to fix this. There was a big dent in the bumper and fender. When I took off the old bumper, I noticed there is a bar or piece that connects from under one headlight to another and it is bent which causes the driver side headlight to be higher than the other. Here's some pics.

So what do you guys think and what is that part called? Can it be banged out back into place or should I just buy a new one (if so, how much would it cost?) Thanks

I was reading around and thinking maybe its a vacuum leak thats causing the defroster to kick on while accelerating. I had someone check the refrigerant charge and they said it was fine. Any ideas what could be wrong or things I could check for?
Anyone have any ideas?

Well what do you know that actually worked. When I jiggled the key after turning and nothing happened, the car started right up. That was perfect, thank you. I guess I know now that I may be needing a new ignition switch... wonderful. Thanks Wizard.

If you're doing it properly, you'll have put in 1.43 lbs of refrigerant.

Well its not empty, just topping off to get cold again. How many psi is that on low end?

Also, Can you identify what #1 is and where I could find it? Cant find anywhere and mine are warped and torn.

buying a max ??

Ok , so me and my wife are obviously new to the site and had a couple questions for some maxima ownwers. We are looking to buy a maxima and there are two different ones we are looking at. One is a 96 5-spd ( but it has cooling problems). The other is a 92 that looks fairly good being a 92. the 96 is only a thousand dollars and the 92 is like 1500. To make a long story short are the performance part for the 92 going to be harder to find since its older ? I really just want some honest solutions. Like for example if the 92 has some kind of underlieing problems v/s the 96. which is more likely to be quicker and cheaper to fix up , etc...
Thanks in advance.

...do you not think it would be more logical to ask about a 3rd gen in the 3rd gen subforum?

Do you know exactly how much is in there now? If so, then do some simple math and add that much refrigerant.

I won't help with adding refrigerant from a can and judging by pressure, as that is in no way an accurate method. Do it the proper way or don't do it at all, really.

Did you not try a dealer, or a Nissan parts site?

For this picture, the first bolt at the top that secures the strut. Does it have to be tight? Everytime I try and tighten it the strut just spins feely. Is that normal? When I drive it sounds like something is loose could that be it?

That is definitely not normal. This is more than likely the source of the problem.

How would I go at fixing that? The Tokico Illuminas state that any tool used on the shock will void the warrenty and I cannot tighten the Strut nut at the top without using a tool to hold the strut.

Where can I get #11 and #12 on this picture and for cheap?

and also, when I turn my car on I think some sort of belt squeaks really loud until I press the gas a few times while in park and it goes away. What is that and what do I have to do/how much do I have to pay to fix that?

Probably one of your axles if its only when your turning. try to see which side its coming from and replace it

Emissions issue

ok i dont know where to begin i bought a 95 maxima after only a thousand miles the engine bearing went. I have what my dad swore at the time was another 95 at the house with a blown tranny. over the last two weeks my friend who is a mechanic and I have gone about ripping out two motors and putting the motor from the maxima with the blwon tranny into the maxima i just bought. now come to find out that maxima we used as the replacement motor was a 94 therefore OBD1 well everything else including wiring harness and such are OBD2. now my question this. is the motor swap now even feasible and what will it take i need ths ca rback on the road asap to go to work and college without reling on other people for rides, i also live in conneticut and the emmisions law says any 95 and older gets the snake up the tailpipe, well anything 96 and above gets plugged in. i cant legally pass emissions if my "95" maxima is plugged in but it will pass for the snake. am i safe or is that law just a technicality and any garage will plug in an OBD2 car?

So you're trying to swap in an engine from a 3rd gen? ...why? That's rather pointless, when a VQ is so cheap.

If it's older than '96, everywhere will put it on the rollers. That's just how it is.

Did you use RTV on the valve cover gasket, or just throw it on without reading any instructions?

so i found out that i my e-brake does not work. meaning that when i pull it, the back tires still spin as if it isn't engaged. guy at the inspection place told me this without even looking (which amazes me). so my question is where can i get a good brake kit (calipers, rotors, pads, fluid) for my 95 SE??

also my whole center console doesnt work (clock and bose). when I bought it (3 weeks ago) it didnt work and i assumed it was because the car is 14 years old. So how would i go about fixing the clock??? as for the stereo...would it be wise to buy an aftermarket or just get a different HU?

thanks for the help
