steering wheels

Can anybody tell me which gen wheels are plug and play for 4 genners? Looking to keep the airbag and cruise functions, but I HATE the skinny stock wheel on my 96 GLE. Are SE wheels thicker?

Shall we assume you're talking about the steering wheel?

The only true plug and play steering wheels that retain both functions are going to be any of the 95/96 wheels. Anything else requires modifications.

IIRC they're all the same thickness, general design is what changed.

Which oil pan is it leaking from? Either way, there's no full gasket, they both use RTV.

Yes, many people have done it, search and you'll find accounts of it. It only costs a few dollars for a tube of RTV and your time.

Or are you having a shop do it? You weren't clear on that.

Either search or look back in this thread, there are several threads specifically about maintenance and high mileage repairs.

No wasn't planning on having a shop do it unless it's really worth it. If it can be done by me and a friend then I'll do it on a weekend or something. I'm not sure which pan figured it was the lower? Tried searching maybe I'm using the incorrect terms will def. look back and try different terms...

It's quite a simple procedure, really. Remove pan, remove old RTV, apply RTV, bolt pan up.

That's what I thought since it's simple it'll get taken care of I greatly appreciate your fast response that was my only concern. Other than that I have a 97 not sure how familiar you are with the model but is the air bag attached to the actually panel that says air bag?? So without it will leave a whole in the dash?

Assuming you mean on the passenger side?

Yes.

You could always try to remove the panel and mount it up in there somehow.

You could try using dye.

FWIW if you didn't replace the airbag computer, you need to do that as well.

Let's see, you could lead us to assume something (then ***** and moan when we assume incorrectly), or actually relay all of the pertinent information when posting.

You can either get help, or act the way you are. Your choice, newbie...

Can I assume your to put oil BACK in the motor, once you bolt the pan up? Don't want to assume too much....

LOL, how's it going pmohr?

My bad - next time I'll include the plainly obvious so you wont have to assume anything.

And just out of curiousity, what other wheel could you have assumed I was talking about that might have some effect over the airbag and cruise control functions?

Who knows, for all we know you may have thought that the road wheels may have had some effect on those systems. We've seen crazier ideas come through here.

In any case, you're thinking too far into a simple comment.

Don't see what's so hard about saying "Sorry, yes I meant the steering wheel. Thanks for the info." Just sayin'.

It wasn't plainly obvious to me, because I couldn't imagine what the "skinny stock wheel" meant. The stock steering wheel on a GLE is pretty fat. Maybe you should get one of those slip-on covers at Autozone if you want to pretend you're driving an Indy race car or something. Steering wheel cover, that is.

LOL - good point. Some, shall we say, unusual ideas on this board about how cars operate. Not slagging this site in particular, but the boards I frequented concerning my previous car (DSM) had a far more (generally) informed membership. But then again, owning a DSM forced you to become informed in a hurry.

Indeed, I've repaired far more than my fair share of DSMs...

I don't mind your typical Eclipse/Talon/Laser, it's the 3000GT/Stealth that I hate, personally.

Any specifics on those unusual ideas? Always interesting to hear the point of view of a new member.

Off the top of my head - swapping out an intake mani for no reason other than the old one might be dirty, fluid leaks in sway bar end-link boots, etc, etc, along with the seeming inability of many to use a basic search function. But like I mentioned, owning a 4G63T will turn anybody into an Internet-search jedi and expert on the horrors of crank-walk.

One of the stand-out features on a DSM board I frequented was an upgrade path for hp increases ie: Do a,b,c for 15-20 h.p increase, do d,e,f for 30-50 h.p etc. Laid out a very clear, logical upgrade path to follow. Would make a great stickie for this site if someone was so inclined. Having owned my Max for about a month, I'm not knowledgeable enough yet to do it. So far I'm only at the K&N panel filter and y-pipe stage (Budget y-pipe arrived today but not yet installed).

Sorry, but the stock steering wheel on a GLE is NOT thick. The wheel on my Ranger, my Talon and my wife's Focus are much thicker and better feeling. To me the Max's wheel is tractor-like in it's size and thickness.

And if a 'wheel' that has airbag and cruise functions isn't plainly obvious to you, well then.....

Could some one explain what exactly vq30de-k is?
As well as 00IV.

Is there a working link for the swaps?

Did you not search for anything?

An improved version of the VQ30DE is known by the designation VQ30DE-K. The K designation stands for the Japanese word kaizen which translates to "improvement". The engine was used in the 2000-2001 Nissan Maxima and adds a true dual-runner intake manifold for better high-end performance compared to some earlier Japanese and Middle-East market versions of this engine.
00VI is the UIM on the DE-K.

Stickies in the AM section:
http://forums.maxima.org/all-motor/4...swap-info.html

If you have questions, search first, post second.

You as well, search.

The first hit when I searched for 'pathfinder wiring':
http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...disc-bose.html

The information is in there, should you want to read the thread.

Why do you assume it's an ECU problem?

Did you search? http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...9+technosquare

If you're still on original coils, that's your misfire problem.

My gf has a 96 Maxima, with approximately 167K miles no the engine and transmission. The engine runs strong, but just recently, it started hard down shifting between 1-2. Is this a sign the trans is on its way out? I checked the fluid, it is the right level, it does not smell burnt at all. Could there be any parts of the suspension that could be causing this type of clunk?

Thank you,

matt

my coils have been changed out within the last 20K miles. I'm going to check the coils, injectors, and fuel regulator tomorrow. if I can to make sure there all good. My check engine isn't on since I've replaced all the codes and my OBDII reader doesn't pick any up now either. When I stop while in gear or in N it almost stalls and even when I'm driving up to 40mph it still misses bad. I'm hoping it'll be one of those problems and not the ECU.

ok my coils and injectors are good. So I'm still leaning towards the PCM or ECU or what ever you want to call this POS box. Any help would be helpful. Thanks

You need to learn how to search.

This question has been asked thousands of times, at least a hundred times in this very thread.

well are you running a stock y-pipe and cat or aftermarket? did you upgrade your ecu? are you running stock fuel injectors? cold air intake? turbo? tub the car? Fuel cell makes it lighter? Take the interior out yet? Ok I'm starting to get carried away I know just had flashbacks from my drag racing days my chevy LMAO. I really don't know how to mod these little cars yet, but once I get my misfire fixed then it's rebuild time to mod it .

It's unlikely they'd cause an intermittent misfire. Generally the CPS/CKPS' will cause a no start condition, not intermittent driveability issues.

I'd look more towards the injectors, myself.
