You can tell when its working cause you'd normally be getting warm air... once you "hard wire" it. It should start blowing cold air. its not the smartest way to fix it.(cause your can short soo many other things).. but it works for a while.. ( I had run a switch to it, cause if you dont remove it... you'll leave the compressor on, even with the car off), soo... ????? just my 2 cents..

So, I’ve got a AC compressor that will not work unless I hard wire it also. What causes this? When I ran the “door switch check” I could hear the AC clutch engaging as it cycled through the diagnostic test. It seems it should be a simple fix, but electrical problems are such a pain to troubleshoot. My question is, will the compressor be damaged or cause damage by creating too much pressure if it’s allowed to run constantly while the car is running, or do you have to manually cycle it on and off with a switch? Big PITA!

Test your signal side and power side of the a/c relay!
Possible defective low pressure switch as well...

Where is that relay exactly? I've read the relay is built into the IPDM

The usual reason the compressor won't turn on is low refrigerant. Also known as it probably needs to be recharged.
