I see alot of people have rebuilt their trannys - I got a 99 5spd with 203,xxx - how do I know if I should rebuild mine? What are the symptoms of a bad tranny?
I've had mine since 165,000 and so far just changed
3 O2's
tires
oil and plugs
pcv
rear brake pads
I do have a CEL and it is running like crap, will get it fixed this spring

Wow you guys drive alot. I have a 97 with 136k, 125k when i got it 3 years ago.
Master and Slave clutch cylinders
Rear brakes
CPS
Full exhaust
Both CV axles
2 o2 Sensors
If you wanna cut down the miles i have a good tip, do what i do. Tell all you friends your car broke down and you need a ride to work...now do that for 3 years straight. If there dumb enough they'll drive you everyday.

No way, either something is wrong or that car was totally rebuilt. Im sorry but i just dont believe it, if the paint wasn't dulling then the engine should have grease or the seats should be cracking or the wheel wells should be disgusting, the steering wheel should be peeling. Even if the owner babied it thats just not possible, i say the car was rebuilt!!

'97 SE Auto

Bought it with 150,000 three years ago for about $5,000. Now has 225,000. I drive about 80 miles a day all highway. No major problems. I still get about 26mpg and it is as quick as when I bought it. Best $5,000 I ever spent.
Here's the list:
-Both Front Axels and boots
-Starter
-2 Alternators (still having problems)
-Battery
-Drivers rear caliper
-Trans Pan Weld Repair, Someone left a wheel in the middle of the road, I could not swerve to miss it, punched a whole in the trans pan.
-Knock Sensor
-Crank position sensor
-Radio
-EGR Valve
Currently has some small problems.

210K

-both front o2 sensors (125k)
-knock sensor (130k)
-axles (147k)
-camshaft position sensor (149k)
-starter (151k)
-evap vent control valve (170k)
-transmission/clutch (original made it to 203k) -was locked out of gears 1 and 2 but was able to drive it to the tranny shop :P

I believe I have an exhaust leak some where, it's rusted out pretty badly, but I'm not touching it till inspection time.

This car was somewhat troublesome for me but it has always got me from point A to B.

285k miles.
Changed starter three times. Brake master cylinder. Rear wheel bearing.

Needs windshield (sort of pitted). Radiator support (rusted). Hood repaint. Hell, the whole car needs a coat of paint. EGR needs cleaning or replaced. Besides wear and tear items this car still gets 31 highway and 27 in city.

Still trying to figure if I should put some money in it and where to put it.

96 5 Spd SE - 236,000 miles

I just bought it a week ago. It runs strong aside from a miss in cylinder 2 (waiting on coil pack). I think it needs a passenger side axle and some minor front end work. Otherwise it's great.

142k on my 98 5 speed
Knock sensor, tires, and just regular maintenance. but pretty sure my synchros are worn, or something is wrong with my tranny, cause it's rather hard to shift.
