If the airbag light is on and keep blinking then it indicates there is problem with the airbag system. The manual said to have the nissan mechanic check the airbag system asap.

There is a procedure for reading the codes. The Chilton manual states: On the 1995-98 models, drive the vehicles over 20 mph for at least one minute. Turn the ignition OFF, Ground the 4 terminal of the data link connector under the dashboard (next to fuse block), then turn the ignition ON. The codes will appear as flashes of the ABS lamp on the dashboard. Here is a translation chart:

# of LED flashes - Malfunctioning part
12-Self diagnosis could not detect any malfunctions
45-actuator front left outlet solenoid valve
46-actuator front left inlet solenoid valve
41-actuator front right outlet solenoid valve
42-actuator front right inlet " "
51-actuator rear right outlet " "
52-actuator rear right inlet " "
55-" rear left inlet " "
56-" rear left inlet " "
25-Front left sensor (open-circuit)
26-" " " (short-circuit)
21-Front right sensor (open-circuit)
22-" " " (short-circuit)
35-Rear left sensor (open)
36-" " " (short)
31-Rear right sensor (open)
32-" " " (short)
18-Sensor rotor
61-Actuator motor or motor relay
63-solenoid valve relay
57-power supply (low voltage)
71-Control unit
Warning lamp stays on continuously- Control unit power supply circuit or warning lamp bulb circuit or control unit or control unit connector or power supply to solenoid valve realy coil

Lamp stays on during self diagnosis - Control unit

Lamp does not work before engine starts - Fuse, warning lamp bulb or warning lamp control unit

Lamp does not come on during self diagnosis - Control unit

Somewhere in there do I stop the car and put it in park? Or do I have to have really fast hands/good hand-eye coordination?

Wait a second. My '01 accord airbag light blinks when ever my passanger decides to lean forward, then sit back. I belive this is due to it reconizing a passenger in the seat. (Part of side airbag)
May be it's the same for maxima's equipped with Side airbages.
Just Trying to help!!
