How to upgrade/update the stickies- Your input!!!!
So what would you guys like to see in the stickies in our forum to make it better. We have many use less threads and no one seems to care to search or look in the stickies.
So what would you guys like to see done to this forum to make it better?

i honestly wouldn't mind a built in sticky search function. I know there's a search button and all, but you can't just search the stickies themselves. or at least i don't know how to. And instead of having to click the search button, selecting what part of the forum you want to search, just have a search bar directly on the first line before any of the threads are shown. That way, i can be lazy, put the cursor on the search bar, type what i need, and it'll only search the stickies in the 4th gen if i'm in the 4th gen forum. Kinda like a search button for FAQ??

I'd be willing to help.
I actually regret that I didn't this...there used to be a site that listed parts for the Maxima and peoples opinion on them...I think it was like maxmods.dynds.org or something.
Such a useful tool. I used it a lot when I first started out with the Maxima. It's got attacked and then deleted.
Having that alone on this site would be great.

I will make a "Product Review" thread which can incorporate all the intakes(+ suspensions, we already have exhaust, blah blah) we have and where to get and how well it is. But what I don't want is people re-posting their opinions over and over. Thats why so many good threads turn to ****.

more organization is better. i think thats all that is needed.

I think for the product review thing, there should be a submission thread and then someone can paste them into the proper categories in the sticky.
So basically...make a thread called "Product Review Submissions" and then make another thread called "Product Reviews" which is subdivided by categories. I, or another Mod, can then read the submissions thread and add things to the sticky (which will only be a couple of posts - locked) to keep it up to date. I think ALL the products (exhausts included) should be in that thread. Once that is done, we can delete the exhaust thread.
So in the first post I'd have like:
Exhaust with a link to post #1.
Then Intakes with a link to post #2.
etc.
Make me a mod and I can do both of those for ya'll. I work in IT (network/desktop support and level 2 Help Desk), and helped on other VBulletin sites before, if you're looking for someone with credentials.
Just my $0.02. PM me if you're looking to get my help on this.

I don't have the power to make anyone a mod, that is up to the admins. But I do like this idea I will let you know

i think there is entirely too much in the stickies. the thread that states "read here before posting" has almost 3000 posts. not gonna happen. stickies should be trimmed down to essential info; rules, recalls, important links, etc. product review threads should not be stuck imo. put too much info at the top of the forum and it looses it's impact as important info.
#13
I use the stickies! and the search function! Sometimes idk the right terminology though and have to post a question.
I really love this forum btw.
Maybe sub-divide the 4th gen forums. Make a how-to section, interior, exterior, engine and suspension. (did i forget anything)
I really don't want it to change, but if it is going to, I just put those out there for ya.
Thanks kev for all the great info!

If anyone wants to recreate the maxmods site with the info from archive.org, and update it with new material, I can host the wiki on my site.

Too bad no one has that information saved.
#16
A lot of it is still available through archive.org and the wayback machine, and I actually copied a fair amount of the data a year ago or so, just never put it in a wiki.

Pmohr and Ilya, if either of you need help I am familiar with html, ftp, and various other languages/website procedures. Hit me up on aim or via pm you guys.
On topic; Kevlo, I think one thing that would be good would definitely be to 'clean up' the stickies in regards to links, but also, a lot of answers can be found in multiple spots. AKA, LED lighting is in both interior and the 4th gen FAQs, as is how to install a y-pipe etc etc.

We're using one technical FAQ thread. I wrote a standard FAQ section covering the REALLY basic stuff and a glossary. The list of stickied threads is shorter, at least for technical subjects.
There is also a section on particular topics (transmission leaking, brake bleeding, y-pipes, best sound exhaust, etc) there are links to the individual threads. Then every time a good new thread comes up I slip the link into this section so that people can skip to the best threads without having to look through multiple stickies. The fact that it's all in a closed thread means the mods don't have to prune off newbie posts made to it.

x10000000000 in every forum ftw!!
I know when they switched servers and what not some old links changed, now most of them don't work any more. for example I was looking at what brakes fit across the different gens only to find out the link was dead.

I'm saving that crap. Maybe day we'll make something nice.

I'm pretty disappointed that there isn't a HOW TO section. I wouldn't mind doing some write ups, but since there isn't any its kinda hard to even search for one.
Plus a better search function would be better. You get tons of unrelated threads you aren't even searching for!
Only 2 things I would improve and yea I know it isn't sticky related. Sorry.

just a question, are we trying to get news to stop posting questions about information that is already there? or stickies that will make it easier for the semi-informed? or both?
i really like the how-to, but i don't like the
How to change brakes pads
How to change headlight
How to check the CEL
it's weird for my brain to try to look in the 5th or 8th word for what i need.
I think that a How to thread should start with
Headlight - how to change it
Headlight - why it might not work
Headlight - recommended bulb
Brakes - ABS or non abs
Brakes - how to change it
Brakes - recommended brake pads

A lot of the questions I believe come from people that have just joined the site, and do not yet understand how it is set up (AKA the search button, and how to type what they are looking for). I realize that there is a thread for the NOOB's to ask a question, but who is going to sit there and read all 3000 post? They want a answer now! Maybe a thread that only allows a question to remain posted for a limited amount of days. This would keep the thread clean. And also I would think this would make the NOOB's feel more welcome, and less intimidated to ask a question. Come on and admitted guys, i realize the same old questions appear day after day. But if people did not ask questions, what would we have to do all day...work? Just a suggestion.
Otherwise a "How to" would be great!

I think there needs to be a dedicated place for people to post pics of their cars and list as much of the modifications as possible. Its been done in the past but never a sticky. This would let guys check out drops on cars different set ups etc and keep the noob questions down.
