replaced half-shaft and forgot the dust guard....

so in my hurry to replace my passenger side half shaft I forgot to take that dust guard ring (not sure what it's called) off the old one and put it on the new shaft. I really don't feel like doing this all over again tomorrow so how important or necessary is that little metal ring?

When I replaced my passenger-side axle this past summer it came with one on it and ready to go...?

I believe he means the metal ring on the passenger axle itself to protect the axle seal (least that's what I believed it was for, correct me if my assumption is wrong).

Is this the same "ring" that holds the gear oil into your car? Or is it set up the same as an auto tranny?

I would not worry about it. The only thing its really good for is keeping a sharp stick from poking the seal. Pass side is not worth the trouble, and its protected behind the engine.

At the right on this shaft. It shields the seal from damage.

Some of the shafts I have replaced had that protective ring others did not. I would not worry about it.

Yup, it's that metal ring that protects the axle seal. Sounds like I don't need to worry about it. At least not enough to make me pull the axle again. Thanks guys I just needed some reassuring.
