Car Stuck In 5th Gear And Won't Move Now But Speedometer Shows Speed Increasing
SubscribeI'm having problems with my 99 Maxima 5-Spd Stick Shift ...Thursday of last week I came around a curve and attempted to downshift from 5th and my gear was then stuck and I rode down the road till I got to my road and tried to slow down enough to make the sharp turn onto my road and my car then just stopped and on my speedometer it showed that I was moving everytime I tapped the pedal even though I was sitting still , I also hear the sound of gears grinding .. anybody have any ideas what it could be ? I'm thinking either the tranny needs to be replaced or it needs gear oil .. ?

I don't know about being stuck in 5th, but your diff is shot, or a half shaft has popped out. The final drive is spinning, this is driving the speedo. For whatever reason the final drive is not transmitting power to the wheels though.

That wouldn't stop both wheels from spinning and I hear gears grinding .. plus it's hard to put in gear .. but yea my front left bearing is bad .

If you're referring to my post, then you don't understand how a diff works. Most cars are "one wheel drive". A diff is a set of gears that allows the wheels to spin at different speeds. If one wheel loses traction, it will spin double ring gear speed, and the car will not move.Originally Posted by TurboMaximaFan

If a halfshaft pops out of the trans (they do occasionally) you will go nowhere, and you will hear the splines running past each outher with the ends barely touching. This is the grinding you hear.

At 0:06 you can see the left side CV is popped out of the diff case, exposing the shiny sealing surface.

Get it on jack stands and look around. First thing to look at would be driver side inner CV joint. See if it has come loose and moved out away from the transmission. Passenger side has a carrier bearing and wouldn't pop out without breaking the bracket.
Second would be the joints themselves, they could have come apart inside. Look for a joint where part is spinning and part is not. Everything should be spinning from the wheel to the inner joint.
Its also possible that the differential is grenaded, but not very likely.
Are you still stuck in fifth, or can you select other gears? Can you select other gears with the engine off?

At first I couldn't but I put break fluid in and I got all gears now .. but I just can't get the car to move and I hear that grinding noise .

Good deal, but it sounds like you have a hydraulic clutch leak somewhere. check the lines, slave cylinder, and inside the car at the firewall for wetness. BUT FIRST>Originally Posted by TurboMaximaFan

Get that car in the air and inspect just as I laid out two posts up. We'll get you going as long as you're willing to do the foot work.
Another thing I noticed , the oil light isn't on when I first turn the key to On , everything other light comes on like normal except that one now .
Found out that both axles are bad and one is broken and a plug in the bottom was hanging lose and the axle knocked it loose when it broke

If I remember correctly, there are 3 12mm bolts that bolt your axle to the engine. Go to a junk yard or a dealer and get new bolts. I would not drive the car before you tie up your axle.

It looks like the axle popped out do to the carrier bracket or that bracket screw and bracket broke.

Bolt the bracket back onto the engine. Just as I posted in your other thread, If the bracket breaks (or all the bolts come out) the axle will come out of the traans and make grinding noises and no drivey drivey.
BTW why did you start a separate thread for the same problem?

Here you go. wow... how did that happen, makes me wanna check my bolts
He just bought the car, this happened and he ran out of clutch fluid. Car was likely wrenched on by a hack or tweaker and is like this all over the place.Originally Posted by maximaham

Ok, this is a better pic, now the bracket is just hanging loose, where are the bolts, did they break off or the bolts were never on the bracket. Look where the bracket mounts on to the car, see if the bolt holes are stripped or broken in the holes.
