I finally replaced the infamous knock sensor
In trying to get my Max to originally condition (kidding, but I’m trying), I wanted to get rid of the knock sensor code that’s been plaguing since I acquired it back in 2012. I got the full harness and sensor set because it seemed easier.
I used a breaker bar with a 1/2” swivel head, and a magnetic 12mm. Alternated between that and a angled 3/8” I originally purchased to remove the rear plenum bolts.
However, the magnetic 12mm kinda made things a little harder because it would connect and be hard to disconnect when I needed to change angle. I was able to get it on and off in 1 afternoon, but it was a right ***** to remove. Not to mention I have big hands so, only thing I could do was use my fingers to screw the bolt in enough so I could torque it.
All in all: I have noticed an improvement in gas mileage and initial acceleration speed. Can’t say it did anything extreme, but I almost returned it after trying it a couple of weeks ago. But the swivel breaker bar that I’ve only used awhile ago to remove a control arm, made a world of difference.
That said, though I’m glad…it still irks me that this Gen made the knock sensor, power steering belt adjustable and rear valve covers such a pain to get to! My forward facing engine Infiniti is an overall more technical car to work on, but it’s easier. The Maxima is less technical, but in some ways harder.

I used 1/4 drive swivels and extensions after loosening the bolt with 3/8 drive.
I taped the swivels and extensions together with masking tape. That prevents them from separating while under load multiple times.
