To start off, I found a manual transmission 4th gen with 156k miles on it. I have pretty much pulled all the surrounding parts necessary for the transmission and plan to take the rest off today. Here's where my problem comes in. First the clutch was all over the inside of the housing and starter. And when I went under the car, I saw that the bottom of the transmission was covered in oil,, it looked dark brown/black but was very viscous, I had already taken most of the tranny bolts off already so I want to believe that's where it was coming from. With the supposed oil leak as well as the clutch being torn to dust, Is it worth it to take the transmission, knowing that rebuilding it may be impossible as I cant find too many oem parts for the transmission.
Please any advice would benefit greatly as this car was given to me by my dad as this was his first car as well.

If you only removed bellhousing bolts, those don't seal gear oil in the transmission. I've done many clutch replacements where the clutch disc is shredded inside the bellhousing like a mouse nest but it doesn't cause gear oil to leak. It sounds like the transmission potentially has a leak somewhere, so right now the transmission is still mated to the engine in place held by mounts but you have all the bellhousing bolts off?
Thanks for the reply, yes all the bolts on top and side of the transmission that mate the engine to the transmission are all off but the bottom bolts are still on as a place holder as well as the mount to chassis. Clutch is definitely toast I know that. For all the parts for the swap, I believe the yard is asking around $350 to $400. Is this worth the effort to pull out and swap? I mainly want a manual for longevity as well as better control of my car, my AT is a bit clunky but with the leak im a bit scared. Also I cant find replacement seals or bearings, should i call around to different dealerships or use amayam.

Ohh I thought your car blew the clutch, so yours is an auto and the 5spd with a cooked clutch is at the junkyard and you're 5spd swapping. If you're going to the trouble of swapping it, I would at minimum try to see where it's leaking gear oil from before you pull it. If the donor car was bagged on and there's a crack in the transmission housing causing the leak or something you're just wasting time, on the other hand it could be just a CV axle seal leaking which is 5 minutes to bang out and pop a new one in when you have the trans already out and isn't a big deal at all
Myself I would say just try to judge where its leaking and if its not major looking like a crack in the housing, pull the trans and take it and look it over and replace whats necessary before you pop it in your car. Not sure if Nissan has OEM rebuild kits for 4th gens still but Ebay, RockAuto, etc should have aftermarket rebuild kits if you want to go that route

I pulled a 5spd last year for my swap. The clutch and pressure plate were also shredded, it seems like that puts these cars to an early grave. Someone just did not want to spend anymore money on the car I got mine out of.
