Christmas Eve race....

He has a 2000 (or 2001) Alero 4cyl automatic CAI/Muffler

gased her up for the night and started cruising around on 12th street, he calls me up (dude I forgot...is your name Brian?) I offered him a race. I told him of my problems that day with my brakes sticking, so my "Brake" warning light was on for most of the night. He meet up at Best Buy and head out to 57th street, I never knew that part excisted, damn that is one quite section! As we head there, my Brake warning light turns off Horray! Maxine DOES want me to race tonight....or so I thought.

First race we both count to three, hard to hear him count though, his sweet sounding exhaust was way too loud so I just punched it when he does. As I did that, well, Maxine failed me again, the Brake warning light comes on and I get walked on. My car wouldn't pull at 2,800rpms (sweet spot) and again at 5,200rpms (VI changeover) it just felt like it was running off the TQ curve! UGHH! I caught up at about 70-ishmph slowly, VERY slowly walked pass by and was about only 2-3car lengths ahead by 100mph when I stepped on my ever FADING brakes, I had SO much trouble stopping on that first race and I almost had my brake pedal to the floorboard. We pulled over and I tell him of my Brake warning light troubles.

We turned around, waited for the car way up in front to move farther so we can again race. This time I brake-TQ'd but my transmission made strange noises so I let off but by the time I did, he already launched and I was playing the catchup game until, can you believe 80-ish MPH? I was manually shifting in this race, bumped off the rev limiter (6,600rpms@ about 70ishmph) a couple times (GRRR) reached about 90mph and guess what Maxine decided to do? Brake warning light came on again! I mean he wasn't that far ahead of me and I had trouble reeling him in! WOW! Impress doesn't even begin to describe how the second race went like. Dude my brakes where making click click click, pop pop pop noises when we drove back to Best Buy. The light FINALLY shut itself off the rest of the night when we both squealed through the intersection of 49th and Marion.

Madd props to his ride! Excellent front air dam. He and I were both suprised at how much he had me in the second race. He had me listen to his CAI whistle, which BTW was excellently executed for a homemade custom intake. Me and him are going to race again later this week when my WAI frankentake comes in and its suppost to be warmer, not 8 degrees (according to outside temp reading in car). Oh yeah, you asked me about why I was getting a WAI as opposed to CAI, CAI for Maxima's have toooooo long of tube sufficating top-end. WAI has similar bottom end as the stock, but as revs rise, there is gain.

I never really took notice Alero's, especially 4cyl ones. New found respect for them, even in automatic form!

I need the brakes checked out because they are sticking in this cold weather...I didn't tell him but I had the heater and defroster on during both races because I seriously thought it would be an easy race...bad mistake

It wasn't slick out, it was actually just frigid cold and dry. And yes I deserve everything that comes to me for racing with faulty brakes

You must really feel invicible at 18 but even at that age you can die. Sorry to sound gloomy on this night but I hope common sense comes to you before you come to Jesus!

Yeah, I'd have to agree. Is there anything else wrong with your car?

Everything runs fine except for the brakes. I just had everything inspected last 2 weeks ago during my oil change. They changed the PCV valve and said everything is within spec. I couldn't feel it pull hard after 2,800rpms and again at 5,200rpms, but my VI does work. I drove my car this morning to meet my cousins at a gas station to show them the way to my house, it ran fine, "BRAKE" warning light stuck until the brakes warmed up a bit though....
I have to agree, Maxine didn't want me to race last night. Pimp Alero though!

Or maybe it was the driver and how stupid he is for racing with bad brakes? We'll see, I'm having it checked out tomorrow, and we are suppost to race again this Friday.

You should is no way be losing to a Olds Alero. You should beat him starting in 2nd gear.

The fastest STOCK Alero I have heard or even seen was the V6 (I think 3.X L?) that ran 16.1 stock. The 4cyl should not even match that.

I have ran head to head against my friends Alero (w/ the V6). He had a 99 Alero and now a 2K2 Alero. I raced him multiple times in both Aleros when I had my Max back to stock with VB mod only. Needless to say, I would pull about 3-4 car lengths from a 40-90mph roll everytime. His best run was stock was 16.3 @ Englishtown.

There are a few boosted aleros. Supercharged as well as turboed. And a few one offs from Olds, like one with a northstar.

I raced his Alero

For a 4cyl, the 2.4 is respectably strong out of the whole. Synki don't you have a 5speed? Trying to slve some problems, sinces its been cold out, something has been rattling underneath my car, too a point where it actually SLOWS the performance through my butt dyno by not feeling any rush. Anyone want to take a guess, maybe the Cat? AnderbrA did hear my car rattle at take-off, and THAT might have been the reason why I didn't feel a rush at 2,800rpms and again at 5,200rpms and not the brakes. Dude if you have like a car ramp thingy (?) we should take a look at the Cat or maybe even the headsheild.

Yeah, i could hear it through first gear and part of second gear, until i started passing then i couldnt hear it, but when you got about 80 when you were slowly going by me, i didnt hear it at all, well over my car anyways. Its definately something on the exhaust i do believe, can you hear it if you just rev up in park or neutral. We have a floor jack and stuff, maybe this weekend we can take a look. I think im gonna start on my tranny cooler then so we can check it out before i start b/c ill have to take my whole bumper off. I have some noise, but its only at about 6-6500 rpm, but thats from my CAI rattling. Another thing that surprised me is how packed the engine bay is on a maxima....jesus..dont think you could put anything else in there!!

Who is they, dealership?? I know this is OT but I am wondering if they have aftermarket PCV valves now since it's time to replace mine. Everytime I try to buy one at the Dealerships they have to order it. How many miles are on your car. I am wondering why it is that you are getting the brake warning light? What do you thing it is?

Dealer and the PCV valve was about $9 I know they are cheaper but I don't mind paying that much on OEM I have over 60,000miles on the car. The dealer said the PCV valve was suppost to be replaced at about 35,000miles and that it was stuck open. I've always had my oil changed and car inspected there, yet the dealer is blaming me for not inspecting the PCV when they should have during scheduled maintenance...

PCV valves can be bought at our local auto store for cheaper. My driveway is pretty steep and when I park the car, I always use the E-brake before I place the car in park so the car doesn't do that rollback thing when I put it in park. I hate the sound of the transmission when I put it in drive when I don't use the ebrake parking on a hill. Sometimes when I don't do that, the transmission gets fusy and is hard of letting go of park. That might be the case as to why the brake warning light came on. Today driving to Walgreens, no warning lights on whatsoever
