Snapped my 6rib alternator/ac belt this morning

All I got is a UDP, got out this morning after I remote started the car, cleaned the snow off, drove 1/2mile, and heard a bang, normally the same change rattling bang when I go over the bumps on the road that are brought up by pipes underground.

I just heard something and some crap rattle under my car, at the time I thought it was maybe snow/ice falling off the wheel well and rattling under the car, next light saw the battery light, seat belt light, and brake light on. I knew that belt had snapped at that point, got to work 1mile later and verified it. Definetely gone.

Now dont know if it snapped cause my alternator or my ac compressor locked up. If so, im going to be ****ed.

Going to have to drive this **** back home and to the auto store to get the belt and get it back on tonight.

4 miles should be ok.... your battery isn't too old.... just turn off all your accessories and stuff and drive gently...

See I did the belt tightening deal where you twist the belt and it shouldnt tighten more than 90degrees.

There has to be a better way to get the tightness down. The deflection amount dont work.

Just went to lunch, went down to look at the car one more time, found out what REALLY happened. The idler pulley is no longer on the car, all I got is the bracket and the bolt and the adjuster, the pulley and the front bolt of the pulley is gone.

When you have your guy check it out, make sure he reomves that bracket to check if it's bent. If it is, you'll need to straighten it or replace it. On my '92 Stanza the belt snapped and got snagged between two pulleys. The bracket bent and I went through three more belts, an overcharging alternator and another battery before the problem was diagnosed. The bent bracket will cause the pulley to "walk" the belt off the tensioner, and your belt will snap again or get eaten away from the side.

i hope it all works out for you.

Everything worked out fine, took me 35mins to fix. The bracket was fine. Just got the whole pulley assembly. Cost me $69 at the dealer. Wasnt happy with that.
