Anyone get the start-up whine resolved?

It's still cold here in Chicago and I'm getting the start-up whine at temps as high as 35 degrees F. Anyone's dealer find the problem and fix it??

I'm not sure what kind of whine your getting but if it's comming from the passenger side of the engine you may want to try tightening your belts a little and see if that does it.

Yes, I did. I ended up taking the starter out and relubing it. I have no heard the whine since. It takes about an hour and a half. I posted up a how-to in the how-to section.

Good luck! It's well worth the hour and a half in my opinion.

Yeah you'll notice that when you take it apart the cap on the end is filled with dried grease and A LOT of metal filings. Looked like a defect to me with the assembly of the starter.

Re: Anyone get the start-up whine resolved?

Are you referring to the high-pitched grinding sound once the engine is engaged (ie, as the RPM peak), or a sound while you're actually turning the crank with the starter? Mine does the high pitch grind the split second after the engine has started and the RPM peak and does it in the cold only. I guess it's the timing chain tensioner, but I don't see how re-greasing the starter would solve that...?

a rattle would be the chain.. this grinding/whine is caused by the solenoid sticking and not pulling back the gear with the car starts. So for a split second, the engine is driving the starter at about 3x the speed it was intended to spin...
