battery/altenator prob ...long,sorry

ok guys i need some serious help here,
I live in NY and you know we had that bad storm on sat. Me being me I cant stay in the house so ALL day i drove around. Heres the prob, I noticed when i gased the car to reverse or to go forward the lights got brighter and when i put on my blinkers it made the usual ticking noise when its on but it was also accompanied by and high pitched noise, almost like power wasnt going to the blinkers and it was strugglin to get some. I had a system (2 infiniti 10s and a 1000 watt kenwood) for about 2 months but i quickly took that out and i got the underglow kit under the car now but I highly doubt that could drain some power.
1. Is it the battery that just going bad???
or
2 could my alternator be going out
I bought the car in march of 03 so it isnt that old at all.
HELP
has anyone had this happen...............
i DONT want to go to the dealer cause they grimey and they WILL argue with me
sorry for the long post

ok, first thing, is this the OEM battery. if so, have you checked and maintained the water level...a fellor .org member couldn't get it to start and realized that his water level was low. now he's fine.

oem batteries require maintenance. if the water level is low, it will not power to it's full capabilities. distilled water is needed to fill it up.

if the water level is fine, you can take it to sears or autozone and test for the voltage of the whole system. if it's low, it could be a dying battery or a dying alternator. an old fashioned test to see whether your alternator is actually running to begin with is turn on the car then disconnect the battery. if the alternator is fine, the car should stay on. if it shuts off, then you have a bad alternator and your battery has been powering your car.

that should give you a few different ways to test it out. do those and get back to us.

do you plan on gettin a system in the future - yellow top (model D34/78)

no system, but cute accessories and what not - red top will do just fine. it's mainly a starting battery, and is maintenance free, so is the yellow.

main difference is system, it's the only big draining decision between yellow and red.

Check the alternator belt tension, too. The symptoms are of a dying alternator.

You can push on the belt to see how much it deflects at the middle point. I don't know if the 2003 manual would show you how. Mine is a 98 and the owner manual has a picture and instructions on how to check belt tension. The underglow uses very little power, it can't be a problem (unless it is shorted somehow).
