ignition keys for Maxima 2001 - expensive!!

Hi all,

I am new to this forum. I just recently bought an used 2001 Nissan Maxima GXE. I want to get extra keys and reprogram the keys. Looks like it is going to cost me $80 for an extra key and $80 to reprogram it!!! I found some keys on eBay for about $20. Can I buy those and take them to the dealer to be reprogrammed? Also I saw that some of the American cars could have their keys reprogrammed by the owner without having to go to the dealer. Can I do that with my Nissan Maxima?

Any help is appreciated.

Regards
sidamin

I purchased my key on ebay for $15.00 shipped and took it to a local locksmith and had them program it for $35.00. The key works fine and I saved a whole bunch of $$$$$$

Midwestride,
Did you look up a special kind of locksmith or would any of them be able to do this?

in my area, i had to call around to see if they had access to prgramming keys. It is also better just to get all the keys you want now and have them all reprogrammed at the same time so you don't have to pay multiple labor charges. By the way, i also think keys made for pathfinders and altimas will work becausei got my ebay key under "pathfinder key"

With Fords, if you have 2 programmed keys then you can program additional ones yourself. I guess us Maxima owners can't do this?

I would not call them special locksmiths they only have to have invested the money for the equipment to program key and the program for your specific car. The locksmith I went to does not specialize in cars he just does a variety of different work..

I treat my keys as if they are gold. They do not leave my sight. So I will never have this issue. ;]

Well I bought this car used and got a great deal on it...but only one key. So of course I want a spare and also want to make sure the keys are reprogrammed so if someone does have the old keys they cannot get into the car.

Call Dave B up. He'll give you a deal on the key and if u have ur keycode he can probably cut it. But you still have to program it at a locksmith if they ahve a consult II or at the dealer.

take the chip out of your key, place it in the steering column and buy as many $4 keys at Home Depot as you wish. Just an idea as you seem concerned about the price.

in my case, i bought the car used...and got 2 keys. one key is in my hand, the other one is in the remote start thing under my dashboard, so its not an issue of losing them, its just the fact that i didnt get 3 keys when i bought my car.

courtesyparts.com also has a 20th anniversary key for $25 or so i think, so take that to a dealer/locksmith, and you should just be a hair over $50
