How can I conform that my exhaust is making a noise
My engine is sounding funny, I think it is the heat shield, how can I verify that, w/o having to take it to a shop? Is it easy to replace? SHould I replace it with a factory one or what?
Thanks

It's hard to isolate a weird noise coming from your car using the human ear alone. If you have some general idea of where the sound is coming from, you can make things easier for yourself buy getting a length of garden hose and putting one end near your ear while you move the other end around the areas that you think are making noise. When you get the hose near the actual source of the weird noise, you will hear it clearly through the end of the hose that is near your ear.
This technique may not work for your problem, but I used it to track down an exhaust leak, and it worked pretty well for that.

If its the heat shield, locate which one it is and remove it. Its usually pretty easy they all use 10mm bolts. If the noise disappears, problem solved and just leave it off, no harm done. Any muffler shop can do the same, but you will have to pay.
