17 Degree timing adv. Question
#121
Blackbird: That's great news. So I can go up to 18, and as much as 20, eh? I'm thinking of going up to 18 since I've been at 17 for the past 4 months now, so my car's probably use to it and there shouldn't be a problem with another +1 advance. I run only 93, as well.

Hey Blackbird,
The reason I started this was becasue I was going to install the new updated MAF and get the latest software update. I was thinking of doing the 17 degrees at the same time, as long as I would not risk running it lean. Can your BBQ party do the update as well? Also what days were you looking at, Not sure If I can make it as the wife works some weekends, and I get to watch my kids all day.
Thanks!

18 deg will not detonate, heII I never detonated with 20 deg but the gains from going past 18 are not seen, and you actually loose some top end power with the timing that far advanced- so stick to 17-18 deg.
As far as doing MAF ECU recalibration, it would cost ya a lil bit more, and we would have to do this at the dealership for sure- which is few min away from the BBQ spot. We need to download info from the ECU into the Consult, then veriffy what program you need on the Assist docking station, then pull new software from Nissantech.com site into the Consult II and upload them into your car's ECU. The whole process takes bout 30 min actually and you can't do anything to the car while its programing or it will burn out the ECU. After that we can bump up your idle speed if its too low (some Maximas idle at 600RPM which is way low)- to like 750RPM, and bump the timing up to 17-18 deg. We are planing on having the BBQ the 1st weekend of May on most likely Sunday- check out the midwest section of the .org for info on that event. If the BBQ takes place on a Sunday we won't be able to do the ECU reprogram cause the dealership is closed. If thats the case we can reprogram on a weeknite sometime around 8-9PM if you wish, PM me if anything.

New question that hasn't been answered yet. I have a 75 Shot Zex Wet Kit installed about a week ago. Had planned on advancing my timing to 17 deg before the install. Now that I have the nitrous install, would it be safe to do this advance? I've caught ear that with spray I should actually retard the timing, but was told by another member that it shouldn't hurt to advance. Any experience? Any suggestions?

After reading futher into this thread i am more confused than ever. I got 01 SE from day one have been putting in 91 octane (higest in Canada except Sonoco) anyways I am really intrsted in advancing the timming now has anyone done this in the GTA and wats the deal with this gas stuff someone please explain!!!!!11

Advanced timing is a no no on a Nitrous motor, it can lead to some nasty results. Its highly recomended to leave ignition retarded for NOS applications, I dont know how the VQ would react to advanced timing and NOS, I know MY engine lasted 75 shot NOS with 17 deg timing, but every engine is built diff than the other- and I don't wanna recomend something to someone that might blow their engine up, and then feel stupid.

Advancing the timing leads to ignition of the air fuel mixture before the piston is at top dead center compression stroke. On 4 cycle engines like our Maximas, its intake, compression, power, exhaust. It takes 2 crank revolutions to make the full cycle. This is Internal Combustion Engine 101. Overadvancing the ignition will lead to catastriphic damage to the engine, and most likely it will not even wanna run. With todays engines its hard to do this cause timing is adjustable only a few degress via scan tool and the ECU. Each engine has its sweet spot for ignition timing, in my case its 18 deg, anything past that just doesn't make any more power.

Thanks guys.....

I went to my local Nissan Dealer and asked about a timing advance for my 02 SE. The service guy looked at me strange and said it couldn't be done because the computer would just retard the timing back to normal position. Needless to say, I don't think I was received very well at the dealership today. Should I try another dealership? or is a timing advance on the 02 SE all smoke and mirrors?

Any 00+ ECU will NOT reset the timing to the original spec. Once it is advanced using the Consult 2, it can only be returned by going back and having it done again.

The dealership techs who say that your timing will just reset itself are confused. They don't realize that the 5th gen ECU will not reset. The 4th gen ECU will reset itself, though.

Just curious, how many of you have the timing advance with 91 octane being the highest octane available? I know my car will ping with 89 under hard acceleration, so I am guessing I dont have much room to advance if I am limited to 91 in california
