Ignition Coils Question

I got the P1320 ignition coil code and I'm assuming only one or two of my coils are bad and need replacement, however, I'm aware that there are updated coils available for my 2000. I really don't have the money to just go ahead and buy all six coils for no reason if they're not all bad, so does anybody know if it's okay to mix the updated coils with the original ones? Thanks guys.

i know you want a definite answer, but i cant give you that. BUT, i believe you can mix them. i remember reading about them when i thought mine were bad during that whole coil craze on this 5th gen board. (now replaced by the MAF craze)

Yes you can mix and match.

I got a 1320 code a few months back, along with a 304, I believe, which told me which cylinder misfired. I replaced the coil to that cylinder which fixed the problem, but about two months later I got another 1320 code. This time there was no additional code, so I wound up replacing the other five coils. That was two months ago, no problems since and car is running fine. Dave B has coils for about $50 each, with fast shipping. When I did some research a few months ago, some people with the coil problem said to replace them all at once, some said one at a time was OK. Mine started to go at 60K, with intermittent SES light.

Coming to coils on the 2K max, they are poor the least to say. Mine died (one after the other started throwing P1320s) @ 60K and I replaced all of them with 2K1 one and I have ~25K miles and they are as strong as the day I replaced them.. If one coil goes wrong, you can pretty much believe the other's are about die any time.

Now, you said you don't have the money to replace them. I believe that the coils themselves don't fail (meaning the mechanism to produce the arc @ 35,000 volts) but the insulation around the arching chamber that fails. If you wrap the black insulation part of the coils with 3M™ Polyimide Film Tapes (used in high voltage applications) you can get some miles out of the coils, but eventually you may need replacement.

Good luck !!!

Thanks for the info guys...Also...

My car is running just as smooth as it always has and there is no odd acceleration, overall power, or idling problems at all. Whenever friend's cars have had ignition coils go bad they have run horribly and it was extremely noticeable but even with the check engine light on and my knowing that something is wrong, I still can't notice even a slight difference in performance so I'm wondering if it's even necessary at all at this time to fix...the light was on about two months ago (same code) and then it turned off for about a month and it just turned back on a few days ago.

Yea dud you can replace the coils one at a time---how ever they all will go bad eventually--you really can't tell which one to replace unless you get a p0301--p0306--cuz a p0300 is a multi cylinder as the 1-6 tells you which cylinder is misfiring. mine never failed but I made them fail cuz with my luck they would fail after my 100k warranty was up(even though i only got 50k on my car. so if you got a security plus contract you should have them all replaced.
