Let me just add that I bought my '02 with the "carbon-look" '00-'01 taillights, and I love them. I thought they were aftermarket until this forum cleared that up for me.

The sentiment about dark cars with these taillights is absolutely true.

haha i think the 02-03 look more aftermarket than the 00-01 se's cuz it's too altezza'ish. i also changed mine to the black se ones recently and i love how it looks black and white is not too bad

Look good-could look better by using bulbs like the APC Titanium. Give the clear lens a nice clean look. That's just my opinion.

i used an 8mm socket to take out all the screws about 4 on each side i think. pulling the tail lights out was the hardest part. i had to sit in my trunk and use my feet to push it out haha but once it's loose it's easy careful cuz i got lots of cuts on my hand from trying to push =/

Seeing the difference between the Chrome versus all red, I like chrome. On my white 01, I wish they were chrome.

I'm using these chrome coated amber bulbs since I didn't want to use regular amber bulbs that reflect in the housing.

does anyone know where to get high quality red bulbs for those clear/chrome after market tails? In the daylight they look pink. I just ordered a set of those tails and wanted to replace the bulbs with something brighter so I don't get pulled over.

Thanks forum in advance

Here's the one you're gonna need for the stop tail lights it's the 7443 LED

type http://66.252.233.14/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=7443-LED-RED

and for the turn signal you'll need the 7440 type http://66.252.233.14/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=7440-LED-AMB

Thanks for the input...I appreciate it.

Are switching over to these bulbs difficult to install or are they plug n play?

I'm actually looking @ a pair of the 01 SE Black Tails on eBay. Prior to making a bid I had a question. Some threads mention needing the "Housing" on the back. The auctions I'm looking at don't mention that the housing comes with the lights. Two questions:
1. Is it necessary to buy the housing with the new lights and
2. Can I just use the housing in the current lights and move those to the new?
thanks for the info

hmm...all you need are the 00-01 se tail lights and the 00-01 wiring harness. and the orange turn signal bulb too. that's all you really need.

Thanks for replying. So I guess that is where the confusion comes from. The difference between the housing and the wiring harness. For example, I'm looking at this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-01...QQcmdZViewItem

Is the housing the actual light?

It makes no mention of the wiring harness. I'll ask the seller but are these typically sold with the wiring harness?

Finally, if it is not sold with the wiring harness is it possible to use that which is currently on my tails?

I like the all-red 02-03 tails, esp. with lighter colors. However, I've had the idea of getting 00-01 SE tails for my 02 and painting the clear part red. Has anyone seen that before? It could look like crap, but it's an idea I haven't seen mentioned yet.

Also, I've seen a couple of maximas on here with the 02-03 OEM headlights with the silver painted black, and one person referred to "opening up" the lens to paint this part. How is this done without destroying the seal and letting water in?

YEA THE 2000 - 2001 tails lights use a 1156 single filamant bulb for the turn signals, a 7443 bulb for the brake/stop lights, and a standard 912 bulb for the reverse light.

Now for the 2002-2003 bulbs. The turn signal is a changed to a 7440 single filament bulb, the brake lights are still 7443, and the reverse lights are still 912 or 921 bulbs. Ive seen those numbers interchanged for some reason.

NOW THE issue is THAT THE TAIL LIGHTS SOLD ON EBAY ARE PATTERNED AFTER THE 2002-2003 MODEL CARS. THE TAIL LIGHTS WILL FIT PHYSICALLY, AND FIT PERFECTLY. But you need to get whats called the "tail light wiring sockets for the 2002". I got mine from the dealership. I paid like 28 bucks for each harness. They are plug N' play with the 2000-2001 maximas SO FITMENT IS NOT AN ISSUE

i forget what the exact part number is, i should still have the boxes laying around some where ill find em if u need me to
