Need Help...

I looked really hard at cars that I wanted to buy, I was offered a big enough loan to pick up a 2002 Maxima SE and I checked the carfax report and the car appears to be perfect based on it's history and I saw the car and it appears to be perfect.

Problem is, my parents claim the insurance on a Maxima compared to other cars is going to be ridiculous... Is there any reasons why they would think this before even getting an insurance quote on the car? They told me to consider looking at a Grand Am (03-05) because it would be much cheaper and insurance would be much better... After looking around at Grand Am's the price would only be about $1-2000 less... so how do my parents figure insurance would be way up?

can anyone tell me if this is true and if insurance is much worse/higher on Maxima's compared to other cars and why? Also, reasons I should feed my parents on allowing me to get a 02 Maxima over other cars...

I figured insurance would be like anyn other... they even tried to say because the car I looked at was 6sp that the insurance would be even higher... I really doubt that and wonder why they are saying this without just doing the simple thing of getting an insurance quote.

BTW, I am 19. And the thing about the car is that I am paying it all myself (my own loan) and the only help I am getting from my parents is that they will pay the first year of insurance and the first repair work that needs to be done. After that it's all mine, but I really need to convince them, they really aren't letting me and told me today that if I go out and buy that then I can't park it in their drive way lol.

So any reasons for why Maxima's are better than other cars around the $14,000 price range would be helpful.

Call up your agent to see what the insurance will run ya on that car. And then compare it to a Grand Am "GT". I pay 349 dollars per 6months on my 01 5spd Max, that is full coverage with 0 deductible from State Farm, I have towing and other lil stuff included in the policy. My 94 Q45 would run me 650 per 6mo if I kept full coverage on it, but I don't think its worth paying that much on my Q. They car would get totalled in a instant if it got hit as body parts are MEGA expenssive for those cars. I have liability on it only and it costs me 290 per 6mo. I am single and in my 20s still. When I get married the insurance rate will drop on my Max to approx 295 per 6mo.

Maximas are reliable and will be way more fun to drive than some plastic GrandAm. On top of that GrandAms are far from being reliable, especially the 3.4L motors.
