Stock Subwoofer Dead on 2000 Max SE

I have searched the archives and can't find anything on this so I'll ask....my stock subwoofer on my 2000 Max SE isn't working. I did a few tests, there is power (12V) and the ground is good to the subwoofer, there is also a good signal from the head unit for the amp on/off. But I can't tell if there is an audio signal coming from the amp or not because when I disconnect the connector from the sub I think it turns off the sub amp. Has anybody had this problem (dead sub) and how did you solve it? I want my bass back!

I think you will get better feedback in the Audio/video forum.

There is a circuit board attached to 2k and 2k1 bose subs that likes to go out. I've talked to Dave Burnette about this before and he cant find the needed part on the parts list.

^ I"ll second that one. Tried to get the replacement part and my local dealer couldn't find the part #. My circuit board died awhile back when I first got the Max, but now I've got my MTX 12's in, so I don't care! But there's a place that can fix it for a fee, right here.

Cold Solder Joint or Bad Component on Board?

Thanks for replies, I did also post on the Audio Forum, but figured this is probably a strictly 5th Gen problem so posted here as well. So this bad board, do you know what exactly goes bad? I think I will take the sub out of the car and have a good look at it, see if I can find the problem. Will let you all know.

Thanks

I think this is a great excuse to just get a REAL sub and amp!

mine did that and all that happened was one of the soder points on the back broke. get a magnifying glass and find the broken soder point then re-soder it.

Found The Problem

I found the problem, thanks to Stardust & Icewake. You guys were right, it was solder joints gone bad. The subwoofer has its own amplifier built right into the sub, I took it out of the car and took it completely apart and couldn't find any problems with the amp. But there is an attached board beside the subwoofer, (seems like an afterthought on Nissan's part) that has a relay on it. This relay turns on the sub amp when the radio is turned on. There are 5 solder points for the relay and all 5 points had come loose, probable due to the vibration from the subwoofer itself. These solder points are tiny and it took a strong magnifying glass (actually a jewelers loop) to see the breaks. So I resoldered them and re-installed the unit and presto, it works!

I too have that same problem. I think I have found the board that the relay is on (1" x 2" circuit board in between the sub and amp), but I can't find the 5 solder points. Please help.

Finding the Bad Joints

Osmo2002, assuming that you have the same problem, the relay has 5 pins directly below it and like I said, the bad joints were not visible with the naked eye, but could clearly be seen with a 10X magnifier. It would only take one joint being bad to disable the sub amp, but in my case it was all 5, very strange. Anywho, maybe just try resoldering the 5 joints and connect it up and see if it works. Good luck.

I replaced my woofer and the in-line converter as well as the amp and mine still didn't work. Took the car to an audio specialist today and found out the fuse was blown. The fuse for the subwoofer is labeled "speaker" under the hood. Afer replacing the fuse, the sub started playing again. It took almost 2 years to discover that it was a simple fuse. Now, I have to dynomat the deck because the rattles seem to be worse now. Hope this helps you!

Damndest thing. For the last 3 days after work, my Bose has been blowing me away. It's been years since the subwoofer fired, but the heat - and I'm using a windshield screen - has it working.
At least until it cools down after dark.
I noticed it right away Wednesday, Metallica was pumping on 104.3 I want this full time lol, might be time to pull the rear deck apart.

In her better days - 1 owner car

There are a lot of threads on fixing this issue. It's slightly different from 00 to 01 and up.

This search will get you where you need to go.
