A "pinging" noise? Are you running regular (87 octane) gas?

Engine Pinging.....2003 Maxima with 98k miles. Under very light loads at any speed, I hear a slight pinging or knocking. If I press or release the gas pedal, it stops. It never makes that sound during hard acceleration or normal/heavy loads. I use 93 octane regularly, so I don't think it is fuel related. Oil changed (with synthetic) every 5k miles. Any thoughts?

Okay so I have a 2000 Maxima SE. I just recently got into the modding game, so I have many questions. But first, I recently thought about getting Angel Eye Headlights, like this, Angel Eye Projector Headlights, but I was wondering, are they hard to install and where is the cheapest place I can get them ?

Thanks

Pinging tends to come from running lean, having too much advanced timing, or a fuel/compression mismatch (severe carbon built-up, water in fuel, stuff like that). The knock sensor will make your ECU being to retard the timing so it'll never be "too" bad.

So, in this order, assuming your timing has not been fiddled with:
- try a different brand of fuel
- fuel injector cleaner
- check for vacuum leaks
- check injectors/replace as needed

Disclaimer - I didn't hear it, so this is obviously based on what you stated. Other things can make it sound like your engine is pinging. Exhaust leaks from either end of the manifold can sometimes sound like that when you're driving it, although that should increase in volume the higher your engine revs.

Umnitza.com sells the gear. You'll need the right headlights in your max too - IIRC they're 2002 and 2003 model years that have the two-part lights.

Thanks! Since my post (reporting a squealing noise continuing after a power steering leak was fixed) I have investigated further and determined that the continued squeal is the starter bendix mechanism not disengaging.

Naturally, motorvate's site isn't working right for me, and the reman starter I picked up from RockAuto was bad (spun free and never engaged), so I ended up just cleaning and re-greasing the existing starter with assistance from the FSM diagram. I don't have a lot of time on it, but so far it sounds great, and the grease inside of it was really nasty.

I am trying to sell my car but have a bad cat. I am looking to replace it, but no sites say that they have cats for california cars... I have a 2000 Maxima. Is there a CA & Fed spec for 2000 maximas? or is there just one version. Can I buy the 49 state legal cats and will they pass smog here in CA? Help please. Can someone pm me so I dont scroll through hundreds of pages to find my post.... Thanks guys.

Anyone know how to rewire the key ring light to stay on while driving? This would be a great mod for anyone with a colored key ring. Thanks

Just thought I'd introduce myself.

My name is Tyler and I am no stranger to modifying FWD sedans, I used to have 2004 Acura TL 5AT with full bolts minus FI . Unfortunately, I sold it last October because I felt I couldn't afford the car anymore.

On a brighter note, I am picking up a 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE w/ 175,000 miles for $500. Only problem really is it has a blown transmission .. I figured I would just drop another 4AT in there, strip it out, and put some basic bolt ons. I know the owners personally and it's been meticulously maintained .. so I figured it would be a good pickup as a second project car.

I was considering a manual conversion .. but way too much money for me at the moment.

Just wanted to say what's up!

Since I'm here, might as well ask a question.

How much wHP do these cars put down with some simple I / H / Catback? The 3.0 w/ 4at that is.

Can anyone help me out with this question? Do they have a CA & Fed spec 2000 Maxima, if so, how do I know which I have?

If I were you I'd call the parts department at your local Nissan dealership and ask the parts guy if he can see different parts for CA and the rest of the US.

FWIW, my Canadian '01 SE is a 50-state emissions vehicle (and 10 provinces too), although that does not guarantee that they didn't sell a different model in some US states, it's quite possible, since the Gen 5's are specific to the North American market.

Yes, there were Cali, Fed, and Canada spec '00s.

Look for the instructions in the 4th gen stickies, it's the same thing.

Look at an emission label in the underside of your hood; if the word "california" is there, you have a CA spec. Also by the number of plugs in a bank of harnesses sitting right in front of your engine (between the radiator and the engine); if you have 4, it's a CA spec, otherwise, is Fed.

Newbie here......

Hello to all. I recently purchased a 2000 Maxima. Thus far it seems to run great except at start up when it cold out I can hear a weird noise like the starter continues spinning for a sec. Other than getting it checked out is there any thing else i should be aware of. The car has 96,000 miles on it. I would like to do a few simple mods to the car like install a newer head unit, new tires and Nissan alloy wheels instead of the 15" steels that are on the car now. I wanna put 6x9 speakers in the back deck but, I notice there are no cut outs. Is it recommended that I do this, I'm not looking to add amps or subs at this time as i'm 43yrs old and I would like to keep my hearing.... Lol

I've got an '03 Titanium w/94k on it. I got it in '07 with 48k on it. I have not done anything but scheduled maintenance on it so far. Great car. I haven't really heard about the oil leaks, but I did have on my '96. I had to replace the rear main seal sometime in '99 or 2000. Are you sure it wasn't on the 3.0? Oh, and if you get one with the Bose system, they sound great, but are prone to skipping, etc--especially in cold weather. Not sure if it's an issue from dust getting on the laser lens, but standard CD type lens cleaners are useless against it. You'll have to yank the whole unit out and send it off to get it fixed for about $150. I opted to just plug and MP3 player in via the tape deck and not deal with keeping up with CDs anymore.

I wouldn't go cutting my rear deck. The 00-03 only had speakers in the rear doors. If you get a Bose system in yours you got a sub only in the rear deck. I'd stick with the stock locations and upgrade the speakers.

I believe cylinder 6 is the front far right (if you're standing in front of your car facing the engine).
I'm assuming you also have the code for the actual cylinder (P0306?).

There is a diagram labeling them from left to right; left 1-3-5, right 2-4-6. The point of reference is the front of the engine (not the front of the car) which is the side where the belts are located, so it is as if you stand on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
The link below is to the Factory Service Manual (FSM). The section where the diagram is located is EM, page 72.

you sir/mam are my hero!

yep, i feel like a dope. while you were posting this i swapped 6 and 2 and went for a ride then re-checked the codes. tripped a cylinder 2 misfire and replaced the coil. man, i wish i had asked on here beore spending $130 instead of just $70 why didnt they design the engine with 6 similar coils? on the bright side i had changed the plugs before the coil so im well on my way to learning how to do a tune-up......... the hard way. should i bother changing all the coils as the money comes up or just ride it?

The tires and wheels section will probably serve you better with that question, especially if you're looking to go with a big brake kit later and want something that'll fit right later, has the right offset, and so on.

The other place to look is the members' gallery. Most people will either list their wheel type, or you can pm and ask about ones you like the look of or something.

I am sure there is some way to make google search cardomain.com too, which should give a great impression of what wheel looks good with what car.

engine flush?

this might be off topic but...i have had a p0011 and p0021 code since i bought my car this time last year, i just finally got some extra cash to throw at it and threw in 2 camshaft solenoids which is what these codes call for. my light just turned back on and sure enough same codes...the nissan dealer told me a while back to get an engine flush and it should fix the problem but i chose not to believe them and just bought the new parts instead. they say that the light is on because the oil changes on the car were not kept up with and the motor as all sludged up and what not. so im guessing its not getting enough oil pressure?

but my question is what do you all think about getting an engine flush done? good or bad? and by the way my car is almost at 144k thanks!

I don't recommand flushing it. Get a oil change first, then reset the code. Keep us update.

Since you posted last, this conversation about catalytic converters, engine codes, and how well which aftermarket manufacturers fit popped up:

already did the oil change thing with nissan and it came back on, they said after they did the oil change if it came back on it would need an engine flush...had a long talk with the nissan shop foreman today and he said that nothing bad would come out of doing the engine flush, he says i will either see results or nothing will happen...so i decided to make the appointment for the flush for tomorrow, ill let you know how it goes! keepin my fingers crossed!!!!

Hey folks, I'd like to introduce myself

I am from Quebec, pretty close to Montreal city.

I bought a '00 maxima last July (which has 120k km) and I am very pleased of this car so far.

Pics :

With wheels on it (18" Rota gunmetal)

Can't wait for this summer, I plan to change shocks, springs, rotors, pads and sound stuff. I choosed this forum in order to improve both my english skills and knowledge of the car. Feel free to correct me at anytime!

Cheers!

2000 Fog light wiring

I am looking to get a fog light wiring diagram for my 5th Gen. I just got some fog lights from eBay, I know where everything goes, except one cable. It's a yellow wire that goes on the Switch harness. Since It's on the Switch's harness, it should go plugged in somewhere under the dashboard. Here's a picture of what I am talking about. Thanks!
