I have an SES light and have seen a 1 mpg decrease due to a bad 02 rear fault- but it may NOT actually be the rear o2- it could be 3-4 other things. It is really a crapshoot, and no dealership or repair shop will guarantee that what they do will actually FIX the problem, unless they just replace both o2s AND the cat...

I have the same issue, so I am opting to replace bank 2 sensor 1 and 2.... i will let you know what I find.

I feel like my problem is slightly different than what is mentioned in the bulletin. My seat will move forward or backward on only one side of the seat. The left side of the seat stays in one place and the right side moves. I removed the driver's seat (very difficult due to the fact that it was positioned in the furthest position back and the bolts are nearly impossible to remove while in this position) and looked underneath to see if there was something jammed in the left side. There are two coiled bars (one on each side) and the right one spins and pulls the seat one way or the other, but the left side does not move at all. There doesn't appear to be anything blocking the left coil from spinning, but it seems that there is only one motor underneath and since it is moving the right side I don't see how it could be broken. Is there in fact 2 motors underneath and 1 is shot, or is something in fact jamming the coil making it impossible to move? Hope this makes sense....
I had a problem with my drivers seat (on an '03). It had a "hard" spot each turn, and eventually wouldn't move (unfortunately right when I'd moved the seat completely forward to investigate the seat mounting bolts. This made it impossible to get behind the wheel to use the car). When I took everything sufficiently apart I discovered that one of the spur gears in the gearboxes that drive each of the adjuster rods had split. (Although there is only the one motor, there is a gearbox for each rod). Under load it would spread apart enough to jam up with the worm gear. So basically the car was disabled by a 10 cent plastic gear!

I fixed mine by putting the gear in the lathe, machining back some of the hub, and making a small metal sleeve to press on to keep the gear hub from spreading apart. Apparently the gearboxes/seat motors are available, but don't know for how much. I *doubt* you could just buy the gear (things aren't done that way these days it seems).

The gearboxes are the same on both sides.

I have a picture, but think it must be on my other computer. I can post it if needed.

cheers,
Andrew

Tranny wont go out due to lowering springs, find a new mechanic, or ask him specifically what failed and why.

There's more to just pulling the glove box. I know I've seen plenty of threads dealing with this. You might want to use to Search option (at midpoint of the very top of this page) and enter these keywords words: in cabin filter. Then select the "5th Generation Maxima (2000-2003)", from the options on the right side of the search page, and hit the "Search Now" button at the bottom. You'll get more than a few threads filled with tips.

Performance headers install

I am about to install performance headers that I got from custommaxima.com. I was going to have a shop instlall them, but they looked up the procedure and told me it would take 9 hours and cost me over $700!! I decided I would just do the project myself little by little. I thought some time ago I saw a post with pictures of basically how to install aftermarket headers.

I wondered if anyone had any general information or even some pictures and a how-to on installing the aftermarket headers since I could not find anything after searching myself. I am also going to wire up an o2 simulator based on puppetmaster's thread, which I must say was well done and should make that job very easy (thank you). Thank you if anyone can provide me any help.

Hey guys, pretty new here, diggin the site and how helpful most of the people are here.

Have a 2000 SE with almost 180,000. I've reaplaced a lot, over the years. For at least a year now, the engine will rev higher than normal. It is easy to see when idling, but it happens while I'm driving and seems to put some stress on the tran when it's shifting. At idle, the car will sit around or alittle bit below 1,000 rpms but when this problem starts, it will jump up to 1.5 normally, but sometimes up to 2,000. When I went to the emissions inspection station and sat in line for a long time, by the time it was my turn, this problem was occurring and it jumped up to like 3,000 rpms when I switched to park.

It doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen a lot more often when it's hot out (starting to happen a lot more, obviously). I Asked my mechanic about it a couple times when I had the car in for other repairs and never got a straight answer. The first day I started reading posts here, I coincidentally happened across a thread that referenced that problem that had a link to somewhere explaining some sort of dance you could do to get it to stop but I haven't been able to find that thread or any other info since then. (mainly because I'm not sure what words to use when searching)

Also, I have to replace my cat converter and some part of my exhaust sounds like it is loose (again). The last time it was loose, my mechanic said I had to replace the muffler, which I did. I figure since I'm replacing so many parts, I should start putting in some aftermarket parts to boost the car. Any suggestions on the cat and other possible exhaust parts I will be replacing soon? Any good parts that would be around the same price as a standard one?

thanks, sorry for the long post...

Ok, now I feel like a jackass, I did another search, this time with "high rev" and found a thread with a bunch of other people that had/are having the same problem. Seems like the most common solution provided is a new ECT. So the next time I take my car to the shop, I'll ask my mechanice to fix that. Anyone know about how much that should run me?

Also, second part of my original post 5 minutes ago I'm still curious about...

I have a 00 max, and my cooling fans dont come on at all, at any temp, not even when the AC is on, any idea what it could be? I'm guessing electrical, relays or something, cause if they were bad only 1 should be out not both at the same time? Any ideas?

Thanks

It could be that only one of them went down first, then the other, and you didn't notice it. I had to replace my fan assembly not too long ago after I tested the relays, along with the fan connectors, and those proved to be good. The first thing to check, in my opinion, are the fan connectors to see if they are getting any power at all. If they don't, then check the relays. There are some instructions on how to do that on the FSM, I believe. I can't remember exactly how is done right now.
Your car should be overheating, especially so when idling or crawling in traffic.
EDIT: I'm a bit amazed that you joined the org in 2003 and this is your first post..... problem-free car for so long or good use of the search option when you had one?...

Ok, more direct question this time... If I get rid of the pre-cat by getting some new headers without one, will I still be able to pass the emissions test with only the regular one? If yes, then if I were to get one of those 2 high-flow cats offered on custommaxima.com would I pass the test also?

Hi, my suspension on my 02 maxima are due for replacement and i figure it make sense if i would just go ahead and get some aftermarket parts for it compare to buying oem. I found a suspension kit from Tokico - springs/shocks kit (part#HPK339) that seem like a good option for me but the site i order it from didn't have it in stock and refunded my money and now i'm trying to find another site to order this from. I found this site on google: http://www.eracingworks.com/Tokico-H...3-p-45283.html
Any body ever order from them or heard of them? I've tried calling couple of time to check stock and never got a return call so it's kinda weird. I'm really just looking for a good site i can order from, i went thru the list in the stickies of sites and most didn't really have what i was looking for.

i have a quick question. If the stock springs are progressive, meaning that on one side(top or bottom) the coils are wound tighter giving a lower spring rate, to lower mine i was thinking of just cutting the springs(on the tighter side) to give me 2" of drop. Would this work? I know it would be a harder ride, but if i can get my hands on a set of stock springs, i really want to try it

Why not buy a set of lowering springs? They aren't that expensive...

the precats are only needs while the main cat heats up and starts working...once the car is at operating tempature, the precats are not needed.

so if your car is heated up before the test, you will be fine

newer cats are good quality and not as restrictive as previous ones...a "high flow cat" is pointless

I'm willing to bet if he has state inspections they will notice he removed it, and fail him.

car has trouble turning on!!

my 01 maxima se has been having trouble turning on but the starter seems fine, i think it may be an engine problem-like an O2 sensor. But some symptoms are when i get to a low enough rpm in 2nd gear you can hear like a rattling, probably a cylinder..idk honestly. and also, i just got an HID conversion for heads and fog lights abd it seems like since they disconnected the battery completely it has not been running as well, (i have an exhaust leak too, let's just say my muffler isn't connected anymore).

most states have two inspections and neither will notice it
safety - its not a safety item
emissions - they test the tailpipe emissions (if the car is warmed up, it will pass)

It's illegal. I remember in Mass they used to put my car on a dang lift and inspect the whole damn thing. Even putting the car on a dynometer machine to test emissions.

It's illegal to remove anything having to do with the emissions system. I'de remove mine if I were getting headers, but the OP should be careful depending on how strict their inspections are.

The only downside to not having those inspections here Jason, is the POS that are on the road. Vehicles with inoperable lights, busted out windshields, etc.

I have a question. My bf has a Nissan Maxima SE. (also known as 5.5 generation of Maxima). I am looking to purchase new rims as a present. His current rims are the Touring 18" V.1 from a 350z and weigh 26.5 LBs. He definitely wants something lighter... and to keep it 18"x8". And i know that the 350z rims should fit his Maxima (same bolt pattern and same hub bore i believe). I do know that he generally prefers rims with thinner spokes (as opposed to bulky ones). I also know he hates deep chrome (bling bling type of rims). I know theyre pretty expensive through the dealership and therefore was looking to purchase through aftermarket. The only lightweight ones I could find thus far are the Rays Engineering ones (the 350z one). Any advice or help in finding rims that match the above description would be great and where to buy them from for a decent price...ie. not 1000/rim! Thanks!!!
