Hm, I don't know how strict the laws are in MD (suppose I could look it up, huh?) but whenever I go nowadays (at least the last 5 years or so), they just hook my car up to to their computer and check the codes. I don't think they even have a lift there...

Repaired gear for 03 power front seat adjusters

Here's the pictures of the little gear in the seat drives. There is a worm gear that meshes with this gear. This is the before pic. You can see the crack at the top. Under load the gear would spread out enough to cause the worm to bind.

Here's my fix. The collar is on the other end of the gear than the pic above.

It's a pretty small gear, likely about half the size it appears in the pics.

So far, touch wood, it's been working fine.

cheers,
Andrew

This made it impossible to get behind the wheel to use the car). When I took everything sufficiently apart I discovered that one of the spur gears in the gearboxes that drive each of the adjuster rods had split. (Although there is only the one motor, there is a gearbox for each rod). Under load it would spread apart enough to jam up with the worm gear. So basically the car was disabled by a 10 cent plastic gear!

I fixed mine by putting the gear in the lathe, machining back some of the hub, and making a small metal sleeve to press on to keep the gear hub from spreading apart. Apparently the gearboxes/seat motors are available, but don't know for how much. I *doubt* you could just buy the gear (things aren't done that way these days it seems).

The gearboxes are the same on both sides.

I have a picture, but think it must be on my other computer. I can post it if needed.

cheers,
Andrew

I was gonna suggest that you post on the 45th generation forum but realized you already did.
Not knowing which fuse you replaced or what were you doing when things shorted out, you might want to check the fuse that sits at the end of the red positive battery cable (can't remember if it is there on the 4th gens). It's a 120 Amp fuse that you can get at any autopart store if blown. But you want to resolve the issue that caused the short in the first place before you replace it. Sometimes just doing some work around the engine bay without disconnecting the negative battery cable can cause that fuse to blow.

If you order it from crutchfield.com, then they should supply you with all the necessary hardware and they have the adapter wire for the BOSE system, I just don't remember how much it cost from them.

Euro-spec question

Hi,

I have a 2000 Euro-spec (Irish) A33 with a VQ20DE engine. Does anyone know if this model is OBD II compliant? OBD II didn't become mandatory over here until 2001.

Thanks!

Look under your dash for the port. It's typically located where your left knee is on the drivers side.

It is my understanding that the O2 sensors don't kick in until the engine is warm, so I don't think that they are the problem.

Your engine crankshaft rotates in a circle. Circles have 360 degrees in them. 17 degrees advance refers to the amount of degrees before the piston is at the top of the circle when the spark plug ignites to burn the fuel in the cylinder.

As far as not running well, an exhaust leak (if it is close to the O2 sensor) will fool the O2 sensor into thinking it is lean and richen the fuel up, so your fueling could be screwed up because of it. If you disconnect the battery, you erase the ECU’s memory of what it has already corrected and it has to relearn, so it could be screwed up and just need to relearn.

The rattling could just be a crumbling exhaust. A piston sounds more like a hard metal knocking.

Not enough details to address “hard turning on”

Have a quick and maybe even dumb question. My girl has an 00 what we believe to be GLE with power leather seats but no heated seat buttons. I was at the junkyard the other day and picked up some heated seat switches from an infiniti M30 that i've seen many of you use to work on this gen max. If i connect the switches to the harness that already ran for them and stick a fuse in the proper heated seat slot will it work?

In other words...do all 5th gen max leather seats have the heated coil in them?

If not, and i have to grab some (which i think I'll have to do anyway) are they PnP?

Watsup guys, just bought an 02 max GLE with 109k for $6k couple months back. I have been lurkin on the org site for a bit for info and stuff and i gotta say its helped me out alot. Haven't really posted anything on the site before but been reading and modding my car here n there. so far engine wise i got the berk WAI. planning on installing OBX headers n megan catback wen i get the money. The Max came with ebay halos/xenon bulbs and I switched to ddmtuning HID kits. As for audio, I have the bose and just installed the AVIC-Z1 from pioneer. Hi:

I need to replace the thermostat of my 2002 Maxima GLE. However, the idler puller bracket is partially blocking the thermostat. Does it mean I also need to remove the bracket too?

thanks

If it's partially blocking it and it wont allow you to remove it, then I guess you need to remove that bracket too. I'm not sure if 2002-2003's are different than the 2000-2001's around that area, but my iddler pulley bracket does not block it at all, so I didn't have to remove it when I changed my thermostat.

I have a 2001 se 20th anniv.. I've determined the MAF is dying and needs replaced. My mechanic suggested swapping to a performance intake and bypassing the MAF altogether. Since the part is expensive.. Anyone tried this? Wonderin how I'd go about it..
