ping/knock mileage problems

01' I30, 89k miles, premium fuel, no SES codes...
I'm having a constant problem with ping/knock under light to moderate acceleration. This seems to occur when driving on flat or hilly roads. I have given the car a Seafoam treatment thinking it was due to carbon buildup, but that didn't do anything. I also am getting reduced fuel mileage and sometimes smell rotten egg emissions.
Help!

Sounds like a right wheel bearing. See if you can pinpoint front or rear. Someone correct me if I"m wrong.

I'd like to hear an explanation for this too. Cat? Do precats do the same rotten egg smell thing as the cat, or how can you tell when the precats are done?

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure that the shakiness is coming from the front end. It does feel however that it comes more from the left (driver's) side than the right (passenger) side. I will try to confirm on my drive home from work today.

Thanks again!

They both give off the same odor since they’re made of the same material. The reason the pre cats are referred to as such(pre)is because they are further upstream(closer to the engine). The reason they are further upstream is so that they can heat up faster and lower emissions faster than the main cat can downstream. In order to do their job, they must be warm/hot.

As for the pinging issue, perhaps try colder plugs and an oil catch can.

I only get pinging if i put anything but premium, perhaps your gas station isn't giving you the proper quality of gasoline?

because the oil hasn't lubricated the system sufficiently....that's why you let your car "warm up" on a cold morning before driving it.

Should the warm up take more than 10 minutes?

I wish that was the problem...I've tried multiple stations with the same result.

I was thinking more like a bad knock sensor or O2 sensor problem. Am I off base?

So after driving home it still seems that the vibration is coming from the front, and maybe more on the driver's side than the passenger's side. Any ideas?

hey
i read on a couple of pages back that for maximas with an aftermarket headunit, to get the trip button on the steering wheel to work is as simple as grounding the brown wire
does anyone have a DIY or can explain as to how i would go about doing this?

If the KS is dead, the car will go into a timing retard scenario. Meaning the ECU will retard timing in order to combat any ping since the sensor would be out of wack.

O2 sensor wouldn’t have any direct affect for pinging either. It will run overly rich, and therefore, keep combustion temps low, if anything reducing the risk of spark knock.

corrections: O2's can also make the engine run lean. Did it in mine when the O2 went bad... of course, my car was a tad ghey...

Do you have AFR readouts that prove this? My primaries are not connected right now and I'm in the high 12's/low 13's @ part throttle under 40 MPH/1200. Anytime after that, I'm @ 14.7 or a touch leaner (15.0).

So, are you going by what a mechanic told you, or by what you actually know?

So I'm baffeled as to why the ECU wouldn't try to compensate anyway...could it (ECU) be faulty?

Could a faulty O2 sensor cause it to run too lean making it ping?

Wouldn't a bad o2 sensor or knock sensor set off the SES light though??

Instead of trying to thinking about it too much, be simple. Get colder plugs and an oil catch can.

245/45R/17--.66% speedo difference

275/45R17s are 2 inches off spec. 245/45R17 is still pushing it.

Go 235/45 and take to 2% or so error, or get wider rims.

Need Help

My ecu fried cuz of bad IACV... i got a new IACV but dunno where to get the same type of ECU.

It says A56-Q77 Z98 type of ecu and they are hard to find. Can i get a second hand ECU and will the dealers be able to program it or can my car take a donor ECU without troubles.

I have a couple of issues on my 2001 GLE w/ 98K.

1) I feel every bump I go over. Makes a thumping sound as if my springs are completely worn or something and nothing is absorbing the bump. If I continuously push down on the front of the car to get it bouncing up and down and let go it stops almost immediately. I was told that was an effective way to check the shocks/springs to see if they need replaced, and if it stops quickly then they're good. I checked my tie rods and they are tight and the bushings look good. The transverse link feels solid too. Does it sound pretty much like my shocks or springs are just shot? This was something that just started about 1.5k or so ago and has gotten progressively worse. Its not a vibration or anything, its just a hard thump.

2) My driver side window screams at me when I roll it up. Sounds terrible. Anyone experience this?

Thanks!

Don't hold me to this, but i think you can get an ecu and have them program it to your key.....

Scrub it with tide. Should come clean. I‘ve had similar occurrences with Cola.

A window screaming at you is typical?

Try spraying some silicone down in the window jams. Often dirt and grime get in there and cause those issues.

Hi,
I have a modding question, to which I've searched, and browsed much of the 5th gen thread to no avail. I'd like to build a flip/switchblade (i.e. VW) key for my 5th gen. Has anyone done this, or is there another place on the forum I should look? I found some ideas on a G35 forum, but they use the newer remote and key. (see links) Please let me know of any thoughts.
see post #216 http://g35driver.com/forums/showthre...ight=VW+remote
It's the subject of this thread:

Has anybody tried fixing their ECU when it got fried. My IACV fried the STA509A (MOS FET Array). Having an elect engineering background i can easily solder a new chip. but then again will the ecu function properly.

thx

I went to a guy that own's a Nissan specialty shop and he got me a fresh ecu and reprogrammed it for me when mine blew. Best $180 I ever spent.
Unless you know someone who can do it then you are pretty much stuck going to the dealer.

Just picked up an 02 SE...

Hey all,

I'm Maxima noob but not really a car noob. I co-run celicatech.net and make custom turbo's for BMW's so I can wrench with the best of them. Just have a few specific questions about the Maxima. I just picked up an 02 SE for my commuter and had a few questions. I would search, but for some reason I don't have permissions to search - or post in any forums (noob status rocks!):

I. It's a 6-spd. When I'm WOT and I go to shift; even after I release the gas peddle, the engine continues to rev for a bit. I know the 02's are drive by wire - is this a slow response from the system or a programmed in "feature"? It does not do this under normal driving conditions and I just noticed it to be odd.

II. This engine has a timing chain I know, my car has 88k miles on it. Is there anything I just rip apart and get taken care of now while I'm in the mood? When does the water pump normally go out, and should I replace the tensioner's and whatnot on the chain?

III. Road noise - is it me or is this car way noisy?

IV. Do you know of any stereo's that I can re-use the steering wheel controls for? I needs me my ipod and have a nice deck but I don't want to to loose the steering wheel controls because I like them

Also - anyone want to buy a nice brand spanking new BOSE 6-disc? The guy I got my car from just got a new one before he sold it to me.

Thanks guys!

My TPS shows that it closes (with respect to voltage) as soon as my foot leaves the pedal. But my car is 4AT, so It should be the same for you. I have not heard of this behavior being common on the boards though.

One of those if it aint broke, why bother? Older gen VQ's would typically have a small intermittent coolant leak, and that was the indicator that the pump was n its way out. But I have not heard of it happening with later VQ's just yet (Model years 02+).
