Maf problems fixed

I'm just checking in to post the results of my maf problems. Firstly, I bought the car used in January and after about 3 months. It started stalling about once a week, but progressed to multiple times a day. I went through every procedure possible, from cleaning out tb to replacing my maf twice, but there was no change. I finally bit the bullet and took it to the dealership. 2 days and $400 later, my car is fixed and runs perfectly. The nissan tech told me that there were not one, but 2 broken wires in my wiring harness. I haven't had the car stall or even run rough for two weeks.

Maf

First off what a great site for info!!!

Ok, same symptoms here as most, along with a P0171 SES code on my 2K Max GLE. I replaced the MAF myself and the car is running great. I did not reset the code or pull battery terminals as some have suggested. The SES light went off by itself after about 3 days of driving. Here is where my new problem has begun.
The SES light came back on after 2 days. I went to Advance Auto and I pulled a P0430 code. I reset the code and it came back on after another couple of days, same code.
Initially I did not have the ECM reprogrammed as the instructions stated in the new MAF. But after getting this new code P0430, I figured maybe I need to have it done. I took the car to a local dealer to have the ECM reprogrammed. My car has not been to this dealer since 2003 to replace a O2 sensor. The service manager informed I have the latest ECM for the MAF...When I asked him, Oh, you mean you updated the ECM for this new MAF back in 2003 when I just installed it about a month ago....He looked dumbfounded.. Well long of short he agreed it needed to be reprogrammed but I had to bring the car back another time.
Well, I went back to the dealer. They claimed they reprogrammed. Is there anyway to check if this was actually done??? I have a feeling they just cleared the SES light. Because the SES P0430 light came back on 1 day after leaving the dealer.

The P0430 states the Cat efficiency below threshold, bank 2. If the Cat was bad wouldnt I have pulled the P04030 along with the original P0171 code (MAF)??? The car was running horrible before I replace the MAF, now its running like new. No other symptoms.. I find it hard to believe the CAT is bad.

Thanks to any in advance..............Great Site!

Sounds like another bad O2 or bad Cat, or exhaust leak. Not a MAF issue I dont think.

Next step is to measure the voltage at the oxygen sensor on Bank 2 (the passenger side rear sensor, or the sensor after the converter). The voltage should be low and steady (~200mV, depends on the vehicle). If the voltage varies (e.g. 100mV to 600mV) then it's time to replace the catalytic converter. In fact, it would be a good idea to test each oxygen O2 sensor while you're at it.

I agree with VaporHead. Definitely doesn't sound like a MAF issue any more. You really should have disconnect the battery terminals when you changed the MAF. This will reset the ECU (though not necessarily clear the code). The advantages of this is that the ECU will relearn your driving habits and adjust fuel/air mixture for the new MAF. I don't know if reprogramming the ECU will do this too but for 30 seconds of effort I would disconnect the battery and let it sit over night.

I have a 2001 max, I just had the maf replaced and about a month or so later got the ecm repogramed. The next morning the cel light came on. I had 2 codes 0140 & 0158. These codes never came up before & now they come up immediately after the update, This can not be a coincidence. I believe that the dealer used the wrong update for the ecm reprogram. When I suggest that, the dealer says its going to cost me $82 diognostic fee. the dealer had told me the update ID (23710-95J00B). can anyone tell me is this the right update? or can some one look up this update number and tell what the update is for?

Thanks,
Vince

to this guy ^ why didnt you bring your car into the dealer the next morning when the codes came on , raised HEl! with them and make them take care of it,.. back on topic....

i was very skeptical at first but i am totally impressed by this stuff, thought my MAF was on its way out the door, so I sprayed it with this stuff, and WOW, Felt like i put a brand new one in there,(did it once already).. smoother shifts, better throttle response/idle,.. this stuff def works

just bought one at connell nissan in oakland for $111.87. what will now cost me is the charge for the ecm reprograming. got a quote of around $175.

part #22680-2y0001. and this is the whole unit housing and all, not just the piece that plugs in.

Thats not the MAF. You got the Volume Air housing for a 2000-2001

and it's
22680-2y001, not 3 zeros

i stand corrected with the extra zero, but it is a MAF, just not for my year. now i have a problem, its an electrical part, which they state cant be returned. i told this kid the year about three times, and another two when he told me the price.

i've seen it on courtesy parts.com for 442.89, i told him the price difference and he asked for the site , which i could'nt remember at the time. i'll have to go back when the parts manager is there, hopefully will help me out. wish me luck.

02nis, when you order a MAF they usually give you the housing too. I don't know why but they do and they certainly did when I got mine. You have a couple of choices. 1. Go argue and get the right part. This is going to cost a lot more as the MAF on the 5.5 gens has an extra thermistor. 2) use the 00-01 MAF but transfer the thermister off your old MAF. There's a how-to somewhere in this thread or maybe in the stickies. I recommend this option. It costs less and you won't get all stressed by trying to return the part.

In either case don't go through the trouble of replacing the whole thing. Get yourself a torx bit and just replace the sensor. Don't forget to reset the ecu afterwards.

i did some tread searching and found the how to. thanks for the help fellas.
that ecu takes awhile to reset about 24 hours it has a battery that hold the codes for about that period of time. i never had this problem with my 89 SE.

Awesome man but you don't have to wait with the battery cable disconnected for the ecu reset. And in fact, with the 5.5 gens, it won't work. There's a procedure to do it with the key. Once again check the stickies!

i had it disconnected for two days last week, and it worked, a infiniti tech told me about it, why two day i was out of town. about that key procedure you have any hints as to where the info is. i tried to search it says i am not allowed to search, for some reason. go figure.

I was watching this show on TV today, Two Guys Garage and they talked about this new product, CRC Industries - CRC Mass Airflow Sensor Cleaner. They said this is new so I just wanted to share this with you. Maybe it could help some of you. Here is the website [URL="http://www.crcindustries.com/auto/"]

Can bad gas mileage be an early sign of the MAF on it's way out??? What other symptoms can/may follow before any codes are thrown?

Yes but bad gas mileage can be a symptom of many problems. If your MAF is bad you may experience hesitation during acceleration especially at the low end.

exactly...throttle is very choppy even if you are taking it easy if your maf is real bad like in my case. I just installed my new one a few days ago along with some new coils and plugs and shaved a full second off the 1/4 mile tonight!!! My car was running bad and now its like its fresh off the lot. Big difference.

It'll be around $110 from Dave B IIRC and a noob can install it themselves. Just give him a call and do it yourself. You wont be let down. And know your ECU should be fine.

wow my MAF is on the verge of quiting all together, suprisingly i can't believe its held out this long, i jsut put a weapon-r short ramn intake on and my MAF has slowly been rejecting this new body part, after about 1 week i started loosing any power gains from 5 rpms and up where it would take about 25 seconds to go from 5rpm to redline then shift real hard....now im down to anything from 4 rpm and up is just quits with all gains and resembles a v4 ( not inline but v4).

hi, i have a question. i have 2001 max. MIL is on. it shows P0420 code. it was showing couple different codes for O2 sensors. i changed those and after that this p0420 came on. i don't really bellieve that my CAT is bad. car has 99k miles. I still keep erasing that code and hoping that it not gonna appear anymore and it did the trick for a while. it showed that cycle is over and everything is ok. but after another cycle code appeared again. so maybe anybody has any suggestions what could this be?

thank you

MAF replaced but still problems....HELP!

Ok, so after reading most of these post on MAF i went ahead bought one for me 2K SE, i had the following problems:
CEL light was on, when i start the car it vibrated hard and even made a loud screaming/screaching noise when i started it up, as if it could barely start up, it was slow as a snail, no power at all, sometimes a small 4cyld car would move off much quicker at a stop light than i do...lol, when the car vibrates its as if its about to fall apart of just shut off, the only time the vibration stops is if i move off and am driving but as soon as i hit the breaks its starts to vibrate again. Oh yeah and horrible gas mileage, i have to press gas to get moving.

so after much consideration i changed the MAF two days ago. the results of my changing the MAF are:

increase in power, i can see that im running about close to where i should, also better gas mileage but not change in the vibrations and horrible sound at start up.

Can anyone one of you smart and knowledgeable Maxima enthusiats give me some kind of direction and advice?

thanks much
