i have the same noise from my 01 maxima, i replced the sway bar links but it was still there then i took off the sway bar links, noise was still there, i dont think it can be the mounts because i hear the noise coming from the wheel, after the schools are closed im gonna open the struts and put some isolators in there to see if the it goes away hopefully.

Did yall check your coil spring isolator and ensure that it is in good condition and preventing the coil spring from rubbing on the strut perch? How about the dustboot/bumpstop condition?

Psst on the right front strut where the mount is, not the 3 bolts that hold the strut mount but there is other ones there for the ps lines or something like that, removes those bolts, put a thick washer on them, reinstall, end of noise if all else has failed, the strut mount bumps them bolts sometimes and makes a good thud clunk sound

Here is a tsb for a 2000, i dont know if it applies to your year but this is what i was explaining.

That's pretty interesting, I'm gonna check mine out and see if it's been done already! Large area washer or shorter bolt....

Re: The bang bonk thud thunk noise right front

I think I figured out the 2000 maximas problem with the right front thunk sound.

Its the a/c heat exchanger in the dash. Its starts out quiet then gradulally gets louder over time. Right. Everyone is after suspension well eerrrrrrrr. Unser the hood on the right side is the one of the ac lines, its mounted to the right front strut tower. There is a grommet inside the mount that separates the line from the mount. Its a light foam matierial. Replace this along with the ones that mount the exchanger in the car and no more bang bonk thud thunk noise. Your welcome.

I just went through the dealer to see if they could figure it out. I now have new Cv boots, lower control arms, struts frount and rear(which I cant stand the ride or noiseyness.

Thanks for nothing Nissan but my wonderfull new 3500$ bill.
I was that close to my new jaccuzi. Dam

Another thing to look at is the lower control arm bushings. Our power steering pumps tend to leak and coat it with oil.

02 max front right clunk sound

I have a clunking sound coming from the right side of my 02 max. I had new KYB struts and strut mount kit installed. The clunk was not present before the struts were installed. After about two days after the struts were installed I noticed this clunking sound coming from under the car on the front right side. I was baffled because i just put new struts in thinking that the car would ride like new. Not!!! The car has a stiffer ride which is nice, but now a loud clunking sound whenever I go over bumps large or small. Trying to figure what this clunking sound was I have replaced the lower control arm, put in a new strut, sway bar links (L&R) and a ball joint. No change, the same clunking sound is still there. I have no idea what else could be the problem. Any IDEAS, Please HELP!!!!

did you change the strut boots, since you changed everything else! the boots have a foam like thing in them that prevents the shocks from hitting the body! they also prevent the shocks from bottoming out.

I have a noise now too...

I am quite certain that the noise I have is directly attributable to my changing of the struts. It seems to be coming from the passenger side, which was the most difficult side to change (mostly cuz I tried to put the driver's side on the pax side).

The noise WAS NOT there until after I changed the front struts.

I fixed my strut noise problem.

It was very much my fault. I didn't fully tighten the strut rod nut on top after I installed the struts. I had tried to tighten them OUT of the car, but the rod was spinning.

I found the problem by lifting the hood and pushing down on the car and listening for the bump noise. I did and heard it. I looked at the area where the noise was coming from and saw the rod moving up and down. I promptly grabbed my impact and tightened them right on down. Took it for a ride and she rides smooth and quiet.

front end noise

My 2000 GLE had a bad motor mount (after my Nissan dealer replaced the timing chain <gasp>).

I've replaced sway bar endlinks, strut mount & bearing, sway bar bushings, and motor mounts tonight. My noise is still there... Thinkin the tie rod ends are the next choice. I'm going to get under my car and see if i can get it to make noise...

I fought the same problem in my 02.

I had replaced everything you did in the original post. I changed the passenger side motor mount and the problem was fixed. Mount cost $130.00 online. It took just under an hour to replace.

A good way I found to test this is to open the hood and listen at the motor mount as someone starts the car. The engine shakes enough to produce the same sound as it did going over the small bumps in the road (but not always). Test two or three times. You can also hear it inside.

It's pretty common for the lower link bolt to start moving and slot the hole. Once that happens it will klink over every bump no matter how tight or new the link is.

My rear would make a clanking noise, thought my muffler was loose, turned out the wheel was loose, something about the space between the rotor and the rim. Put a spacer in and the noise was gone.
